    2. Outline Definition Indications Types Complications Clinical Procedures Laboratory Procedures

    3. Interim Partial Denture Definition: Removable prosthesis, designed to enhance esthetics, stabilization and /or function for a limited period of time, after which it is to be replaced by a definitive prosthesis.

    4. Types There are three (3) basic types of Temporary removable partial dentures: Interim Transitional Treatment partial dentures based upon their individual uses

    5. Indications When age, health, or lack of time precludes more definitive treatment Young patients who have lost one or more teeth as a result of trauma When orthodontic bands and wires are difficult to place due to the short length of the teeth (space-maintenance) Elderly patients whose health contraindicates the lengthy and physically trying appointments of a definitive or permanent prosthesis

    6. Indications Interim partial dentures as part of the total treatment: The sake of appearance Maintenance of a space Reestablishing occlusal relationships Conditioning teeth and residual ridges Conditioning the patient for wearing a prosthesis

    7. Indications Esthetics Space Maintenance Occlusal Function

    8. Complications

    9. Clinical Procedures Maxillary and Mandibular alginate impressions (after teeth cleaned) Cast fabrication using a Type III or IV dental stone If the casts can be unmistakably articulated, a jaw record will not be necessary (maximum intercuspation)

    10. Clinical Procedures If a jaw record is needed, a record base must be fabricated Select the tooth shade Shapes and sizes of the artificial teeth can be determined based upon information from the master cast

    11. Laboratory Procedures Flipper fabrication Wax Method: Most of the removable partial dentures have acrylic resin denture bases and acrylic resin artificial teeth Acrylic resin base that extends into interproximal areas provide retention for the prosthesis Ball claps consist of a ball of solder on the end of a piece of wrought wire

    12. Ball clasp

    13. Measuring the ball clasp

    14. Bend the ball clasp

    15. Ball clasp cross the marginal ridges and engages an interproximal undercut on the facial surfaces

    17. The remainder of the clasp is coiled and bent

    19. The coiled portion must be slightly out of contact with the palatal surface of the cast To allow acrylic resin flows completely around the wrought wire and lock it in place

    20. The wrought-wire clasps are shaped and affixed to the cast using sticky wax Selection of the denture teeth

    22. Baseplate wax is softened and countered to fit the palatal portion of the cast

    23. The wax extends into the interproximal areas to provide retention to the flipper

    28. Remember… At 4:15PM, have your Instructor check your flipper and return your ortho. kit Logbook will not be signed until you have returned the ortho. kit to your Instructor STUDENTS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY BROKEN OR MISPLACED INSTRUMENTS
