  7. Sharecroppers • Farmers who turn over part of what they grow to their landlords in return for using parts of the landlord’s land

  8. Origins of Memorial Day • Last Monday in May – Established to honor all servicemen who died in the Civil War. It now honors all wars

  9. Reconstruction • Government attempt to rebuild Southern society and governments

  10. Freedmen’s Bureau • Federal agency set up to help former slaves

  11. Scalawag • Southerners who cooperated fully with federal authorities

  12. Carpetbagger • Northerners who came South for personal gain

  13. Amnesty • Official pardon (forgiveness)

  14. 13th Amendment • Amendment to the constitution that abolished (got rid of) slavery

  15. 15th Amendment • Amendment to the constitution that states no man can be stopped from voting “on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude”

  16. Plessy vs. Ferguson • 1896 Supreme Court case that upheld the legality of segregation
