  2. Yr 7 science course 6 one hour lessons per fortnight Seven teaching units loosely based on the QCA scheme of work; each unit has a levelled test at the end The units/tests cover levels 5 and 6 of the National Curriculum 20 CASE lessons throughout the year, one per fortnight

Yr 7 Scheme of Work Unit 1 Starting Science Measurement Fair testing (variables and their control) Laboratory Safety Unit 2 Living Things Characteristics of Living Things Classification of the major groups Unit 3 Energy Types of energy Conservation of energy Energy from food Renewable and non-renewable sources - generation of electricity.

  5. Yr 7 Scheme of Work Unit 4 Particles States of matter Particle Theory used to explain properties of solid, liquids and gases Changes of state - gas pressure and diffusion. Unit 6 Cells and Reproduction The microscope - animal and plant cells - differences between plant and animal cells. Function of cell structures. Reproduction in Humans. Reproduction in flowering plants. Seed formation and dispersal Germination.

  6. Yr7 SoW (cont’d) • Unit 10 Solutions • Solubility and factors affecting it • Separation of mixtures • Unit 11 Adaptations • This unit straddles the Chester zoo visit. The visit is an integral part of the unit where adaptations are studied ‘in the field’. • Adaptations of organisms to their environment • Behaviour of animals (ethology)

Investigations • The units generally focus on one science but the key ideas of science investigation underpin them all • They are: • Planning investigations – deciding on a strategy, controlling variables, reasons for fair testing • Obtaining data – carrying out practical safely • Analysing data – drawing clear tables, graph drawing (bar or line), drawing conclusions and explaining with scientific ideas • Evaluating data – being critical about the data and method, suggesting ways to improve the investigation

  8. What is CASE? Cognitive Acceleration through Science Education 30 lesson, 2 year programme designed to develop thinking skills Adapted to a 20 lesson course in Yr7 for our (more able) students

  10. What is APP? Assessing pupil progress is system of tracking, assessing and recording pupils’ progress in science skills at KS3. It has five strands called Assessment Focuses (AF): • Thinking critically • Understanding the applications and implications of science • Communicating and collaborating in science • Using investigative approaches • Working critically with evidence There are assessment criteria for each AF at each level (from 3 through to 8) and these are based on nationally recognised assessment guidelines.

For example, • draw mind maps – great for making connections • identify and write down 10 key facts from the unit • write a glossary of the key vocabulary from the unit • think of 5 questions that will be asked and draw up answers • teach a topic from the unit to a family member • use retrieval practice
