  2. Job vs. Career What is the difference between a job and a career? • Job – a relatively short-term work that “pays the bills” • Career – usually a long-term chosen profession or occupation that provides an income.

Employers want employees who… • Basic – read, write, do simple math, listen well and speak clearly • Thinking – create new ideas, solve problems, organize information • Personal – goal driven, sociable, honest • Resource Mgt – makes good use of time, money, and materials • Interpersonal – team player, negotiates • Information – solid computer skills • Technology – operates equipment necessary for job

  4. What’s next after high school? • Work force • Community College • 4 year University • Military • Trade School • Other

  5. Is more education worth it? • Generally, the more education you have the more money you earn • However, more education costs more money • Average costs of college: • Private - $24,946 per year • State(non-resident) - $16,848 per year • State (resident) - $11,338 per year

  7. There is more to work than money… • Typically, a person will spend 36% of their life at work. • OVER 1/3 OF YOUR LIFE!!! • It is important to be doing something you enjoy!

  8. What employees want • Besides money, you should look for these things in a job… • Paid Vacation • Paid Sick Leave • Health Insurance • Retirement Plan Contributions • Life Insurance • Job “Perks” (company car, bonuses, etc.)
