What Is This Course All About? • YOU • YOUR personality, interests, and skills • Careers • Research for YOUR possible future career and other interesting careers • What future job prospects are • Planning skills • Making goals • What YOU need to get the career YOU want • Time management • How To • Write a resume and cover letter • Succeed in an interview • Follow up after an interview

  3. How Much Is Everything Worth? • Term Evaluation: 70% • Two Tests • Portfolio • Projects • Final Evaluation: 30% • Final Exam: 10% • Careers ISU: 20% • Career Research • Guest Speaker Interview

  4. Projects • Portfolio • Chapters 1, 2, and 3 • Occasional portfolio conferences to make sure you’re staying on top of things  • Projects • How Others See You Survey • Goal Journal • Short Essays/Reflections, etc. • Assessments • Learning Styles • Interests • Careers, etc.

  5. ISU • Guest Speaker Interview • Groups of 2 or 3 • Arrange for a guest to talk about their career to the class • Late May/Early June • Dates are booked on first come, first served basis  check as soon as possible! • Pick someone who is comfortable in front of crowds, has an interesting job, and has a passion for their job • Your guest speaker is YOUR responsibility, so you will need to: • meet with them, • prepare them with your questions, • have questions to ask after the interview in case the class is not asking a lot of questions • thank you gift, etc. • 3 Reports: 1 on your guest’s interview, 2 on others’

  6. Some Things to Consider • This is mainly a project-based class • We will only have 3 tests, including a final exam • Keeping on top of your work is CRUCIAL so you don’t fall behind • This half is ALL ABOUT YOU!  • How YOU learn best, what YOU enjoy most, YOUR career prospects, YOUR cover letter and resume, etc.

  7. Ways To Succeed In This Course • Come to class • Listen • Keep on top of your work • Use time in class efficiently (i.e.: do work in class so you don’t have to take as much – if any – home with you)

  8. First Thing’s First • Get a portfolio for Friday (i.e.: duotang,etc.) • Bring in pictures/markers/pencil crayons/magazines to decorate your portfolio with things about YOU • Portfolios will stay in class. Any work not finished can be taken home to complete. • Bring a positive quote for Friday • This is your title page that you will also be decorating
