PSMS BULLYING POLICY • Harassment or bullying is any repeated and intentional act and may include: • Physical Action (hitting, kicking…) • Verbal comment (teasing, name calling, discriminatory remarks….) • Emotional or social form (spreading rumors, leaving or excluding people) • Sexual action (sexual comments, gossip of a sexual nature, sexual touching) • Cyber (electronically transmitted, inappropriate messages)

Respect for Self and Others:Bullying Bullying behavior • act like they rule the world • act mean • act rude • attack people • boss people around • brag about being tough • break people’s things • damage people’s things • embarrass people • force people to hand over their money • force people to hand over their possessions • frighten people • gossip • harass people • hit • humiliate people • hurt people’s feelings • ignore people • insult people • intimidate people • kick • laugh at people

Respect for Self and Others:Bullying Bullying or “Mean” Behaviors • make fun of people • make obscene gestures • make racist or sexist comments • make people feel inferior • leave people out • make people do things they don’t want to do • make people feel uncomfortable • name-call • pick on or verbally attack people because of their race, religion, gender, family background, culture, etc • pick on or attack people because they’re different in some way • push • put people down • refuse to talk to people • reject people • say nasty things about people • say sarcastic things to people • scare people • shove • spread rumors • take people’s things • taunt • tease • tell mean jokes • threaten • touch people inappropriately • use physical violence • use verbal taunts • write nasty things about people

Respect for Self and Others:Bullying Facts about Bullying • About 30% school children is either a bully or a target. • Bullying affects about 6 million elementary and middle school students in the U.S. • 15-20% of all children report being bullied on a regular basis.. • Kids who are obese, gay, or have disabilities are up to 63% more likely to be bullied than other children. Bullying hurts everyone. Targets feel sad, afraid, anxious and bad about themselves. Witnesses/Bystanders may feel afraid and anxious. Respect for Self and Others:Bullying • What can you do if you are the BYSTANDER? • Don’t participate in the bullying • Tell the bully to stop, even if the bully is your friend. • Help the target walk away with you. • Encourage the target to report the incident. • Ask for help of a trusted adult. Tell your parent, Counselor, Teacher, Principal, SRO, etc.

Respect for Self and Others:Bullying • What can you do if you are the TARGET? • Ignore immediately, Walk away, Go to a safe location • Fill out a bullying form, or fill out an online report at PSM website. • Email your counselor, or Mr. Legleiter • Use “I” messages. “I feel”…“when you”…“because” “I would like…” (wish/hope for) • Ask for help of a trusted adult. Tell your parent, Counselor, Teacher, Principal, SRO, etc. • If it does not stop after your report, continue to report until it stops!

Respect for Self and Others:Bullying • What can you do if you are the BULLY? • Be aware of others’ feelings. • Think before you speak and act. • Be respectful. • Don’t participate in others’ bullying. • Apologize for your actions. • Do things different from in the future. • Talk with an adult – change behaviors.
