  1. Ch. 1-2: People of the Colonies • U.S. has been called “a nation of immigrants” • French & British dominated the early colonization period.

  2. French and Indian War- 1756-1763 • GB & France fought for control of N. America • Both created alliances with the Native Americans • GB- won and gained control of N. America

  3. Africans • Most were shipped against their will in the “Atlantic Slave Trade” • They played a major role in the colonies success.

  4. Early Immigrants • Most came from England and its neighbors • Indentured Servants- people who agreed to work for a number of years to pay for their passage over.

  5. Colonial Self Government • Virginia House of Burgesses and Mayflower Compact were two early forms of colonial self government • Both established laws and a taxation system for their colony • Colonist felt that they should have a say in the tax rate and where the money goes

  6. Albany Plan of Union- another early attempt at colonial self govt. (Ultimately it failed) • Mercantilism- economic system that sent raw materials from the colonies to Europe and they were made into finished goods. • Great Britain severely controlled the colonies trading networks

  7. John Peter Zenger Case- est. the principle of Freedom of Press • Newspapers can print what they want as long as they have some evidence to back it up • Salutary Neglect- GB often ignored the colonies and rarely enforced rules which gave them a sense of independence
