  1. Introduction to the Bayou Duplantier Watershed Project An environmental science project funded by Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality

  2. Bayou Duplantier Overall Goal Is to utilize watershed planning tools as a management strategy to reduce pollution within the Bayou Duplantier watershed.

  3. What are the goals for the year-long project? • Understand the relationship between Bayou Duplantier Watershed, the urban forest, and surrounding industrial, commercial and residential areas • Learn water quality monitoring methods • Establish a baseline water quality data set for Bayou Duplantier

  4. What are the goals for the year-long project? • Collect data on the vegetation of Bayou Duplantier and use it for a forest ecosystem analysis • Reforest and plant vegetation using native species • Prepare and make a presentation on the scientific findings to LDEQ and EPA.

  6. How will you learn all of this? • Simply step by step, from the foundation up • Classroom experiments and activities • Field activities • Computer applications including Web based activities

  7. What is a watershed? The land area that drains water into a particular stream, river, or lake. Large watersheds like the Mississippi River Basin, contain thousands of smaller watersheds.

  9. Classroom Activities • How much oxygen do fish consume? • Does pH have an effect on plants growing? • Does fertilizer in the water make algae grow?

  10. Field Activites • Ms. Davis will help you survey the trees around the school • Lance and I will take you to Bayou Duplantier to measure the amount of oxygen in the water and collect samples
