  1. Role of Muslim Men and Women in the US* Seif Fateen MAS Columbus * This presentation is based on a lecture by Dr. Salah Soltan given in Columbus in January 2004 www.mascolumbus.org

  2. People are like metals • Diamond and Gold • Increase in purity and strength in face of hardships • Iron • إن هذه القلوب تصدأ كما يصدأ الحديد إذا أصابه الماء، قيل: وما جلاؤها؟ قال: كثرة ذكر الموت وتلاوة القرآن • Indeed these hearts rust, like the rusting of the iron when water comes to it. It was said: ‘how can we clean it’. He said: ‘remembering death and reciting the quran’ • Dust • Goes with the wind and disappear in water www.mascolumbus.org

  3. Systematic Acquiring of knowledge of this religion Working with this religion without selection Calling to this religion with all our knowledge Defending this religion with all our abilities Passing this religion to the coming generations Five Roles www.mascolumbus.org

  4. Knowledge has to turn into actions • And say work [righteousness]: soon will Allah observe your work, and His messenger, and the believers: soon will you be brought back to the Knower of what’s hidden and what is open: then will He show you the truth of that you were doing. • وقل اعملوا فسيرى الله عملكم ورسوله والمؤمنون ثم تردون إلى عالم الغيب والشهادة فينبئكم بما كنتم تعملون www.mascolumbus.org

  5. Five pillars of Islam are not the whole Islam • Family relations [divorce rate] • Economic relations • [partnerships between Muslims] • [more trust in non-Muslims] • [longest verse in Quran talks about trade debts] • Masjid elections • [ethnicity is more important than qualifications] • من استعمل رجلا من عصابة وفيهم من هو أرضى لله منه فقد خان الله ورسوله والمؤمنين • Whoever appoint for leadership a man from a group, and among them there is another who pleases Allah more, he has betrayed Allah, his messenger and the believers. • وأن المساجد لله فلا تدعوا مع الله أحداً • ليس منا من دعا إلى عصبية www.mascolumbus.org

  6. No Jannah without Jihad and Sadaqah • عن بشير بن الخصاصية قال: أتيت رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم لأبايعه فقلت: علام تبايعني؟

  7. Islam is a comprehensive religion • The prophet (s) answered the delegation of Bani Shaiban who guaranteed the prophet that they will guard Islam from the direction of the Arabs but excused themselves from guarding it from the direction of the Persians by saying “None stands by the religion of Allah except who safeguards it from all of its sides” • Comprehensiveness of Faith • Comprehensiveness of Worship • Comprehensiveness of Manners • Comprehensiveness of Laws www.mascolumbus.org

  8. Comprehensiveness in Faith • Has answers to universal questions • Faith acquired by all senses • Emotions • Intellect • Aqeeda Has to be taken in its entirety • Belief in all the messengers • 4.150 . Lo! those who disbelieve in Allah and His messengers , and seek to make distinction between Allah and His messengers , and say : We believe in some and disbelieve in others , and seek to choose a way in between. Such are disbelievers in truth ; and for disbelievers We prepare a shameful doom . www.mascolumbus.org

  9. Comprehensiveness in Worship • Worship with all your senses • Tongue • Body • Heart • Mind • All other senses • Any benefitial action to the society is considered worship • Getting money to feed yourself and your family is worship www.mascolumbus.org

  10. Comprehensiveness in Manners • No separate category called religious manners • Body health وكلوا واشربوا ولاتسرفوا • Feeding the mindقل انظروا ماذا في السموات والأرض • Taming the selfقد أفلح من زكاها وقد خاب من دساها • Husband and wife relationsو عاشروهن بالمعروف • Family relationsووصينا الإنسان بوالديه إحساناً • إن الله يأمر بالعدل والإحسان وإيتاء ذي القربى • Society relationsلا تدخلوا بيوتاً غير بيوتكم حتى تستأنسوا وتسلموا على أهلها • Relations with animalsإتقوا الله في البهائم فاركبوها صالحةوكلوها صالحة • Relation with the universeإن في خلق السماوات والأرضواختلاف الليلوالنهار • Relation with Allahالحمد لله رب العالمين www.mascolumbus.org

  11. Comprehensiveness in Law • Two main attributes • Manners are a part of law • Intentions are an integral part of the action • Law for individual • Halal and haram + relation with Allah • Law for family • Inheritance, spending, marriage, etc • Law for society • Trade, debts etc • Criminal law • Retaliation, boundaries, etc • Government laws • Relation between the citizen and the government www.mascolumbus.org

  12. Examples • Retaliation is prescribed for you in the matter of the murdered (2:178) • Fasting is prescribed for you (2:183) • It is prescribed for you, when one of you approaches death, if he leaves wealth, that he bequest unto parent and near relatives in kindness. (2:180) • Warfare is ordained for you (2:216) • When you contract a debt for a fixed term, record it in writing (2:282) • Allah permits trading and forbids usury (2:275) • So judge between them by that which Allah has revealed, and do not follow their desires, but beware of them lest they seduce you from some part of that which Allah has revealed unto you. (5:49) www.mascolumbus.org

  13. Warning • Allah has warned those who take a part and leave the rest: • أَفَتُؤْمِنُونَ بِبَعْضِ الْكِتَابِ وَتَكْفُرُونَ بِبَعْضٍ فَمَا جَزَاء مَن يَفْعَلُ ذَلِكَ مِنكُمْ إِلاَّ خِزْيٌ فِي الْحَيَاةِ الدُّنْيَا وَيَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ يُرَدُّونَ إِلَى أَشَدِّ الْعَذَابِ وَمَا اللّهُ بِغَافِلٍ عَمَّا تَعْمَلُونَ • Do you believe in part of the book and disbelieve in part thereof? And what is the reward of those who do so save ignominy in the life of this world, and, on the day of resurrection, they will be consigned to the most grievous doom. (2:85) www.mascolumbus.org
