  2. Tools of Persuasion Persuasion is an important literacy skill. Media, politicians, advertisers, and writers all use specific tools to persuade or convince you of their opinion. Once you know how to recognize tools of persuasion, you are better equipped to make your own decisions. There are many different tools of persuasion. Let’s look at a few examples…

  3. Tool of Persuasion: Comparing • What is it? • Look at ways in which things are the same. • What does it look like? • Watching the TV show, “Modern Family” is like hugging puppies and watching the sunset and taking a nap in a super cozy blanket all at the same time.

  4. Tool of Persuasion: Contrasting • What is it? • Look at ways in which things are different. • What does it look like? • Watching the TV show, “Modern Family” is nothing like doing homework for 16 hours straight.

  5. Tool of Persuasion: Exaggerating/ Using Hyperbole • What is it? • The representation of something that goes beyond the facts. • What does it look like? • The homework we get in English class is killing me!

Tool of Persuasion: Similes and Metaphors • What is it? • Metaphors are comparisons that show how two things that are not alike in most ways are similar in one important way. • A simile is a comparison of two unlike things using the words like or as • What does it look like? • The current economic crisis is a train wreck. • The current economic crises is as bad as a train wreck.

  7. Tool of Persuasion: Repetition • What is it? • Repetition is using a word or phrase twice or more in a short passage; dwelling on a point. • What does it look like? • “Pass this bill. If you want construction workers on the worksite, pass this bill. If you want teachers in the classroom, pass this bill. You want small business owners to hire new people, pass this bill. If you want veterans to get their fair share of opportunity that they helped create, pass this bill. If you want a tax break, pass this bill.” (Obama, 2013)

  8. Tool of Persuasion: Superlative • What is it? • Superlatives state that something is the furthest you can be on a spectrum. They are marked by the suffix-est or preceded by the word most or least. • What does it look like? • “The [New York City] subway is a gift to any connoisseur of superlatives. It has the longestrides of any subway in the world, the biggest stations, the fastesttrains, the most track, the mostpassengers, the mostpolice officers. It also has the filthiest trains, the most bizarre graffiti, the noisiest wheels, the craziest passengers, the wildest crimes." • (Theroux, 1984)

  9. Tool of Persuasion: Card Stacking • What is it? • Information is true, but only ideas, information and facts that support your viewpoint are presented. All other information is omitted (left out). • What does it look like? • Sugar is good for you! Sugar is a naturally occurring substance that is easily processed by our bodies. Plus, sugar is used by your body as a primary source of energy, so when you eat sugar, you’re actually helping your body out!

  10. Your task: • Go through your sticky notes from chunk one of your non-fiction hero book and find evidence of heroic moments for your hero. • How can you use tools of persuasion to relay that evidence? • Write them down in your English notebook.
