  1. Balzac and The Little Chinese Seamstress (pg122-136) Themes and Ideas =)

  2. Theme and Ideas pg122-125 Themes: Pain and Revenge Quotations and Evidence: • “Suddenly, I felt the stirrings of an uncontrollably sadistic impulse, like a volcano about to erupt. I thought about all the miseries of re-education, and slowed down the pace of the treadle”. • “I had turned into a sadist-an out-and-out sadist” further supports that fact that the narrator is a sadist. Analysis: The first quote, talks about the rage of the Narrator, and how he used that to inflict as much pain as possible on the headman. This makes him, a “sadist”. The second quote further supports that fact. These two quotes reveal that the Narrator is actually quite emotional, and takes actions in his own hands. The narrator’s thoughts and feelings shows in a subtle way that he isn’t that nice, and will take revenge if necessary. This gives the reader an idea, that if the narrator gets really mad he can do anything. The writer uses strong emotional language, eg “sadistic”, to further enhance the theme.

  3. Themes and Ideas Pages 126-129 Theme: Love, Sportiness-Energy, Happiness, Liveliness, Passion, Beauty, Danger, Hope Quotations and Evidence: • “She’s a good swimmer” “Swims like a Dolphin” “Dive from Dangerous Heights” “She must have been the only one in the world who still had faith in my ultimate release from re-education” “Sensual Body” Analysis: From the pages 126-133, it tells us that Luo always compliments the LCS. The quotes, good swimmer..., swims like a dolphin are perfect examples of that. The Hope theme, is backed up by the “faith in release of re-education”. The themes of passion, beauty...etc, are described using great detail, and lots of adjectives, eg “sensual body”. The theme is also a little dangerous, as it talks about the LCS “Dive from Dangerous Heights”, and that is dangerous. That phrase also makes the reader think of accidents, and if the LCS might injure herself. The idea is that the LCS is very daring and interactive

  4. Themes and Ideas Pages 130 to 133 Themes: Adventurous, Fun, Fear, Hopelessness, Hope, Sinister, anger, self pity Quotations and Evidence: 1.“Who will ever release me from this mountain” 2.“With a heavy heart, i flung my key ring into the pool” 3.“Strangely Still, almost sinister” 4.“She must have been the only person in the world who believed in my ultimate release from re-education” Analysis: We get a very gloomy theme and feeling, from the first quote. The readers get an idea that Luo might never escape re-education, if Mao rules for a long time. The theme and idea develops into self pitying, hopelessness and some anger, as Luo flung the key ring into the pool. Then, the theme turns a bit sinister, (Quote 3), as LCS goes down and gets the ring and does not return for a long time. This may mean that it would be a long time before Luo is released. The last quote, gives a little sense of hope, as their is still the LCS to believe in Luo.
