Biography • Born on May 24 1742 in Boudry, Neuchatel Switzerland • Was a successful and well known doctor in England and France • Published several books on philosophical and political themes: • -The Chains of Slavery • -Essay on the Human Soul • -A Philosophical Essay on Man • -L’Ami du Pueple (Friend of the People) ; the newspaper he published • French Journalist and Political leader • Before the Revolution he was not accepted as a serious philosophe in France and was mad about that • The Revolution have him an opportunity to get revenge on those who denied him before

Biography continued • Died on July 13, 1793 • Had eczema and many other unexplainable illnesses • Included sores and uncontrollable twitching • Took many medical baths to relieve the pain • Charlotte Corday assassinated one day while he was in the bathtub • She was a Girondin supporter and was sent to the guillotine after she killed Marat

Marat’s View on the Revolution • Encouraged the French Revolution • Wanted to kill anyone who was against the Revolution • Encouraged the September Massacres -a mob that over took Paris in 1792 -lasted 5 days; killed about 1200 people • Hated the idea of absolute monarchy; wanted everyone to be satisfied • Wanted society to be a Republic or have no monarchy at all • Despised the Girondins

Role in the Government • A journalist with extreme views • Author of a newspaper (L’Ami du Pueple) and several books • Was a member of the Sans Culottes • The Paris Sans Culottes were a group of men that wanted a political voice so they stormed the Bastille and took place in the September Massacres • Sat and vote with the “Mountain” group • Very outspoken and eventually got arrested • Escaped his arrest and trial and gave a speech in April 1793 • Encouraged blood and wanted the king dead
