  2. AdolfHitler • Early-life marked by disappointment • Fought in World War I • Awarded the Iron Cross 2 times • Created the Nazi Party • Wrote Mein Kampf, a book about his beliefs and goals for Germany

  3. Adolf Hitler Continued • Believed that “Aryans” were a master race • Aryans had blonde hair and blue eyes • Jews, Slavs, and Gypsies were inferior • Germany was “over-crowded”, needed lebensraum (living space) • Became Chancellor in 1933 • Became Fuhrer in 1934

Nazism • Nazi party became the largest political party in 1932 • The Nazi’s were officers who served under the dictatorship of Hitler. • Hatred of Jews, Slavs, Gypsies, and disabled people • Declared war on the Jews, and blamed them for the economic depression. • Deprived Jews of most of their rights

German Aggression leading to WWII • Economy was destroyed from all of the war debt after WW1, because of the Treaty of Versailles • People were all seen as lower than others after other countries made them take the guilt of the war • They were not allowed to have an army and it made them feel less powerful than other countries

  6. Role in WW2 • After signing the nonaggression pact with Hitler • Germany launched surprise attack against Poland on Sept. 1st, 1939 • France and Great Britain declared war on Germany on Sept.3rd, 1939 • Poster means Winning, or losing

  7. “Blitzkrieg” • Germany used a new military strategy, The Blitzkrieg or “Lightning War” • Used fast airplanes, tanks, and giant destructive infantry forces • Took soldiers by surprise and quickly overwhelmed them • Plan used to take Poland

  8. Taking of France • In his plan to take France, Hitler kept the Allies attention on The Netherlands, Belgium, and Luxembourg • While the allies attention was there, he sent large groups of tanks and troops to go through the woodland of Northern France

The Holocaust • The Holocaust was a mass murder of Jewish people. • It was lead by Adolf Hitler. • Started in 1933 and ended in 1945. • Nazi’s were commanded by Hitler to remove Jews from their homes, and to destroy any Jewish schools and buildings owned by Jews. • Approximately 6 million Jews were killed, either in their homes, on the streets, or in Concentration Camps

  10. Other Facts About the Holocaust • The word holocaust comes from the Greek word “holokauston”, which means a completely burnt sacrifice to God. • Anyone with at least 3 Jewish grandparents was to be killed with no exceptions. • Holocaust denial is now a crime in Germany

  11. Impact of World War 2 on Germany • Millions of Germans killed • Cities destroyed • Expulsion of 11.7 million ethnic Germans • Destroyed Germany’s reputation • Made the German economy go back down • Divided into 4 zones (American, British, French and Soviet)
