  1. GETTING TO KNOW COMPUTERS BY; KENDRICK ROCIO

  2. THA WORLD WIDE WEB • Technology in our society is changing at a tremendous pace.  People 25 years ago could not imagine much of what we take for granted every day, such as cell phones, global positioning devices, digital cameras, the learn about the biggest thing to hit our culture since television, the Internet. We will then focus on the most powerful service available on the Internet, the World Wide Web.

  3. ESSENTIAL COMPONENTS • or ethernet card, processor and monitor.  Yet, hardware alone can not show you web pages.  Although you have the modem or ethernet card to connect to the Internet, and the monitor to display the web pages for you, without the software your computer can not make the modem work, find the right web page on the web, or figure out how to bring it to your computer and display it properly.  You can think of software as part of the "brains" of your computer. • There are many types of software, such as word processing, games, email programs, encyclopedias, web browsers, juke boxes, etc.  The most important software on your computer is the Operating System.  This is the "Master Mind" of your computer.  It allows you to easily access all your other software programs, and assures that they work well with each other and your computer's hardware.  Most computers come with the operating system and some software already installed, so whey you first boot up your computer it is ready to go.

  4. COMPURTES MONITORS & DISPLAY • Computer Monitors & Displays • MonitorsIt would be impossible to use a computer without a display or monitor giving you visual feedback on what you are doing.  The monitor shows you what is going on inside the computer.  Many people think of the monitor as an inseparable part of the computer, when in fact it has nothing to do with what the computer can or can't do.  In fact, you could hook a different monitor up to your computer every day if you wish and it would not effect your computer's performance, programs, or files in any way.  Monitors are usually connected to a video card, which has been snapped into a slot in the motherboard, allowing the computer to send the display to the monitor. • The most common type of computer monitor in the past has been the CRT (Cathode-ray tube).  These provide a quality display and have dominated the market since the beginning of the personal computer age.  However, they use a lot of power, give off a lot of heat, and take up a lot of room.  Taking more and more of the market share is the LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) Monitor.

  5. DRIVES & MEDIA • Computers typically play both DVDs and CDs in the same drive.  DVD can hold approximately 5GB of information.  They first broke into the market as a format from which to watch movies.  They have begun to push CDs out of the market. Both external and internal versions of all DVD/CD drives are available.  Therefore if for some reason your computer does not already have one, you can install an external version using a USB or Firewire connection. • USB Drive (Also called Jump, Flash, or Thumb Drive) The newest drive to gain popularity is the USB Drive or Flash Drive.  This is also known as the "thumb" drive since it is about the size of your thumb.  This little drive simply slides into one of your computer's USB ports, allowing you to save to it.  When you are finished, you can just slide it out and it is small enough to fit in your pocket.  Storage capacity on these drives are constantly increasing.  Many offer storage capacity up to 128 GB.

  6. OUTPUT DEVICES • Many people today use their personal computer to listen to music.  You can now purchase speakers for your computer similar in quality to those you would find with a stereo system. • "Higher-end" speakers often feature volume control, a sub-woofer for a deeper sound, and upon occasion, rear speakers for "Surround Sound." • PrintersThe two most common printers today are the Photo and All-In-One printers. Photo printers print on photo paper of various sizes.  All-In-Ones print with very good quality and are versatile with the ability to print labels, envelopes, and more.  All-In-Ones can offer phone, fax, scanner and copier.  These printers are very popular because save space, where before you had to make room for all these different machines in your work area, now you just have one device.  Both use Ink Cartridges that fasten into a print head that moves back and forth across the page.  Inside the print heads are many nozzles putting ink on the page.

  7. COMPUTERS CONNECTIONS • If you have ever looked at the back of your computer, you may have noticed a collection of oddly shaped things that look like outlets.  These are your computers many Ports.  They are how your computer connects to the many peripheral devices such as printers, scanners, keyboard, mouse, and many more.  If you can identify these connections and know how to use them, you will be able to get more out of your computer.  Listed and shown below are many of the ports found on today's computer and a brief description of each. • 1 -Power Adapter InThis is where the power cord connects to the computer. • 2 - DVI Video OutputThis is a digital video connection that sends the signal to your monitor.  It replaced the older analog VGA connection.
