Characteristics of Alston’s work • Own style developed from New Dance (Post-Modern dance) • Formalistic approach rather than expressionist. • Balletic footwork • Cunningham approach to choreography • Release Technique • Martial art influence: Tai chi • Strong relationship with the musical Accompaniment

  3. ‘Overdrive’ (2003) Choreographer: Richard Alston Movement material: The Company Dancers Sound score: Terry Riley Steffen Schleiermacher Revised by: Lighting Design: Charles Balfour Costume Design: Jeanne Spaziani 8 Dancers: 5 male, 6 Female. Duration: 21 minutes

  4. Style: • Abstract treatment. • Collaborative approach, the dancers individually created material from sound samples. • Similar material shared across different genders. • Complex use of ensemble and group relationships. • The relationship of movement to accompaniment – Music visualisation.

  5. Overdrive • Overdrive uses the music to actually help and break down the structure of the dance. • The dance is split in to 16 different chapters. This largely due to the different formations that occur.

  6. Musical Accompaniment • Terry Riley’s Keyboard Study #1 • Musical starting point of Overdrive • Alston influenced by a piece which used musical accompaniment of Steve Reich –sloppy and lack interest. • Alston wanted to create a sophisticated music visualisation of the music.

  7. Costume • All dancers wear long free flowing trousers which allow full mobility in the hip joint. • There is a gender difference between the way in which the costume is made and worn • The female dancers tops are a halter neck which shows off their athletic toned backs. • The male dancers wear a slash neck long, sleeveless top which allows us to see their toned arms as well as their extension • The only difference between the costume is the colour. The men wear pale grey, whilst three of the women wear a shocking poppy red. The remain three female dancers wear a grey and red outfit in which the colour seems to seep down the body.
