  2. Social Condtions • Living conditions were horrible in the late 1800’s. Houses and streets were often over-crowded. • Families were poor, with the average salary being below today’s minimum wage. • Social movements in the late 1800’s: • Social Purity Movement: attack by the church and factory owners against prostitution, birth control, and abortion. • Temperance Movement: led by Frances Willard against alcohol.

  3. Economic Conditions • 1873, farmers were plagued by drought. Many were in debt and were forced to sell their land. • Jay Cooke and Company failed, causing panic, and led the nation into depression. • Investing in stocks and bonds began to grow in the United States. • Railroads became the first major shareholder corporations, followed by Wall Street and other major cities • It was a time of capitalism rather than social Darwinism

Political Conditions Presidents of the late 1800’s: • Chester Alan Arthur: • Passed the Pendleton Act which stated that government jobs should be award on the basis of merit. • Enacted the first Federal Immigration Law—Chinese immigration was suspended for 10 years • William McKinley: • Depression of 1893 has almost run its course, as well as the extreme agitation over silver. • The US annexed the Philippines, Guam, and Puerto Rico after the 100-day War

(Cont.) • 14th Amendment 1868: defines citizen and grants equal right, life, liberty, and property to all citizens. • Chinese Exclusion Act 1882: prohibits immigration of Chinese immigration for 10 years • Geary Act 1892: (1) extended ban on Chinese immigration (2) forced any Chinese person found in the country to prove their citizenship and (3) require laborers to obtain certificate confirming their legal status
