  1. Mark Twain

  2. 1868 Mark Twain (Samuel Langhorne Clemens) visits Hartford for the first time. He meets with Elisha Bliss of the American Publishing Co. In November and December, Twain lectures in Hartford, West Meriden, New Britain and Norwich. 1870 Twain marries Olivia Langdon of Elmira, New York, on February 2. A son, Langdon Clemens, is born later that year.

  3. 1871 Twain moves to Hartford with his wife and son. The family rents a house on Forest Street in the Nook Farm neighborhood on the western edge of the city. 1873 Twain and his wife purchase land at 351 Farmington Avenue in Nook Farm. They hire architect Edward Tuckerman Potter to design their home. While Olivia oversees work on the new house, Twain collaborates with Hartford's Charles Dudley Warner on The Gilded Age.

  4. 1874 Clara Clemens is born. In October, the family moves into what is now The Mark Twain House National Historic Landmark. 1881 The Clemenses hire Louis Comfort Tiffany's interior design firm, Associated Artists, to decorate the first floor of the house. The Prince and the Pauper is published.

  5. 1884 Twain publishes Ulysses S. Grant's Personal Memoirs. Twain also makes his first investment in the Paige Compositor, a typesetting machine. Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is published. 1888 Yale University confers an honorary Master of Arts degree upon Twain. 1889 A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court is published.

  6. 1891 Twain moves his family to Europe after financial reverses, including losses on the Paige Compositor, force him to shutter his Hartford home. 1896 While the rest of the family is in Europe, Susy Clemens makes a return visit to Connecticut. While in Hartford, she contracts meningitis and dies in the family home on August 18.

  7. 1903 Twain sells his Hartford home. 1906 Twain speaks at Clara Clemens' American singing debut on September 22 in Norfolk, Connecticut. Proceeds from the concert are used to install a memorial window to Olivia Clemens in the town's Episcopal Church. 1909 Jean Clemens dies at "Stormfield" on Christmas Eve. Twain funds the construction of the Jean Clemens Memorial Building to house the Redding library.

  8. 1910 Twain dies at "Stormfield" on April 21. He is laid to rest beside his wife and children in Elmira, New York. 1927 The Friends of Hartford purchase The Mark Twain House to prevent its demolition. 1974 Hartford celebrates the centennial of The Mark Twain House.
