  5. 1. CHILDREN TO PARENTS:LOVING OBEDIENCE. Eph. 6:1-3

  6. 1. CHILDREN TO PARENTS:LOVING OBEDIENCE. • “Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. “Honor your father and mother”—which is the first commandment with a promise– “that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.” (Eph. 6:1-3)

  7. OBEY • “Obey” (hupakouo), “under/ to hear”: thus, to be under authority. • Present active command.

  8. HONOR • “Honor” (timao), “to honor, to revere, the duty of children to honor their parents.” • More than just to obey. To show respect and love, to care for them.

  9. OLD TESTAMENT LAW • Ex. 21:17– “Anyone who curses his father or mother must be put to death.” • Ex. 21:15– “Anyone who attacks his father or his mother must be put to death.”

  10. FROG IN THE KETTLE • THE WATER IS HEATING UP! If my grandmother could come back and see what we now tolerate… • 88% of sex depicted on TV is outside marriage. • 10 to 1, alcohol is the drink of choice on TV. • 4 top themes of music are: #1 Rebellion; #2 Sex; #3Drugs/alcohol; #4 Satanism/Death. • Over 1 ¼ million abortions each year, etc.

  11. If a teenage boy (12-22 yrs.) has no father in the home he is 300 times more likely to get in trouble with the law!!!!

  12. A girl who loses her father before she is 6 years old is 5 times more likely to be sexually promiscuous before she is 17 !!!!

  13. Sign of the end times • 2 Timothy 3:1ff – “But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love , unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God– having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with them.”

  14. Malachi 4:5-6 • “…Before that great and dreadful day of the LORD comes. He [Elijah] will turn the hearts of the fathers to their children, and the hearts of the children to their fathers; or else I will come and strike the land with a curse.”

  15. FORK IN THE ROAD • Not right or left. • Heaven or hell.

  16. Proverbs • Solomon wrote a book of the Bible (basically) for his children.

  17. Prov. 1:8 • “Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction and do not forsake your mother’s teaching.”

  18. Prov. 2:1 • “My son, if you accept my words and store up my commands within you…”

  19. Prov. 3:1-2 • “My son, do not forget my teaching, but keep my commands in your heart, for they will prolong your life many years and bring you prosperity.”

  20. Prov. 4:1 • “Listen, my sons, to a father’s instruction; pay attention and gain understanding.”

  21. Prov. 4:10 • “Listen, my son, accept what I say, and the years of your life will be many.”

  22. Prov. 5:1 • “My son, pay attention to my wisdom, listen well to my words of insight…”

  23. Prov. 6:1, 6, & 9 • “My son…go to the ant, you sluggard: consider its ways and be wise! … How long will you lie there, you sluggard? When will you get up from your sleep?”

  24. Prov. 7:1-2 • “My son, keep my words and store up my commands within you. Keep my commands and you will live; guard my teachings as the apple of your eye.”

  25. Prov. 7:24 • “Now then, my sons, listen to me; pay attention to what I say…” (warnings about the adulteress, prostitute follow).

  26. Prov. 8:32 • “Now then, my sons , listen to me; blessed are those who keep my ways.”

  27. Prov. 13:1 • “A wise son heeds his father’s instruction, but a mocker does not listen to rebuke.”

  28. Prov. 15:5 • “A fool spurns his father’s discipline, but whoever heeds correction shows prudence.”

  29. Prov. 15:20 • “A wise son brings joy to his father, but a foolish man despises his mother.”

  30. Prov. 17:6 • “Children’s children are a crown to the aged, and parents are the pride of their children.”

  31. Prov. 17:21 • “To have a fool for a son brings grief; there is no joy for the father of a fool.”

  32. Prov. 20:11 • “Even a child is known by his actions, by whether his conduct is pure and right.”

  33. Prov. 23:19 • “Listen, my son, and be wise, and keep your heart on the right path.”

  34. Prov. 23:26 • “My son, give me your heart and let your eyes keep to my ways…”

  35. Prov. 24:21 • “Fear the LORD and the king, my son.”

  36. Prov. 27:11 • “Be wise, my son, and bring joy to my heart.”

  37. Prov. 31:2-5 • “O my son, O son of my womb, O son of my vows… It is not for kings to drink wine, not for rulers to crave beer, lest they drink and forget… and deprive all the oppressed of their rights…”

  38. 1. CHILDREN TO PARENTS:LOVING OBEDIENCE. • “Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. “Honor your father and mother”—which is the first commandment with a promise– “that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.” (6:1-3)

  39. 2. PARENTS TO CHILDREN:LOVING DISCIPLINE. • “Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.” (Eph. 6:4)

  40. “Do not exasperate…” • “To irritate, to make very mad or angry.” • Col. 3:21– “Fathers, do not embitter your children, or they will become discouraged.”

  41. Here’s how you might do it… • Overprotection • Favoritism (Isaac & Rebecca) • Push, push, push achievement • Discourage them, never give approval • Neglect them (David and Absalom) • Bitter words • Cruel punishment

  42. “Instead bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.” • Training=discipline them in love not in anger, fairly and consistently. • Instruction=admonition (KJV), what you say to teach them, like in Proverbs.

  43. Training=Christian Discipline • “The heart of Christian discipline is to bring the heart of the child to the heart of the Savior.”

  44. Prov. 3:11-12 • “My son, do not despise the LORD’s discipline and do not resent his rebuke, because the LORD disciplines those he loves, as a father the son he delights in.”

  45. Proverbs 12:1 “Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge, but he who hates correction is stupid.”

  46. Prov. 13:24 • “He who spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him is careful to discipline him.”

  47. Prov. 15:5 • “A fool spurns his father’s discipline, but whoever heeds correction shows prudence.”

  48. Prov. 19:18 • “Discipline your son, for in that there is hope; do not be a willing party to his death.”

  49. Prov. 22:6 • “Train a child in the way he should go and when he is old he will not turn from it.”

  50. Prov. 22:15 • “Folly is bound up in the heart of a child, but the rod of discipline will drive it far from him.”
