  2. Warm-up: Revolutionary Russia • What conditions in Russia led to the Russian Revolution? Name at least three. You can use your Cornell Notes

Cornell Notes Review: Tsarist Russia • Russian Empire ruled by a Tsar (Emperor) • Romanov Dynasty • majority of population are poor peasants • 1.5% of population owns majority of land • Beginning to industrialize • 10 hour work days and low pay and terrible conditions • Capitalist society • Elite seen to take advantage of the poor • Discontent over WWI

Rise of Lenin • Vladimir Lenin • Revolutionary reformer • Leader of Marxist group called the Bolsheviks • Mensheviks were their moderate rivals • A Marxist • Idea of class warfare between Proletariat (the poor) and Bourgeoisie (the rich) • Believes force of professional revolutionaries are needed to overthrow the rich to create an equal Communist society • Promises peace, land, and bread
