  2. Introduction • While exploring a cave, you found a hidden treasure of minerals. While looking through the treasure, you have noticed that there are ten different minerals. But, what are they? Would you like to find out? Grab your friends and let’s start identifying!

  3. Task • Using several resources, you will define the characteristics of each mineral. When you have gathered all of your information, you will use a Mineral Identification Key to identify each mineral, using five of the characteristics you found when you answer the question “What are the characteristics by which minerals are identified?” • All information will be placed onto the Mineral Collection Chart, which will be turned in as your final project. • There will be three roles in each group: “Look” Expert “Hands-on” Expert “Strength” Expert

Resources • Testing kit – including a streak plate, glass plate, steel nail, and a penny • Mineral Specimens of Mica, Talc, Halite, Calcite, Quartz, Sulfur, Feldspar, Galena, Copper Sulfide, and Pyrite • Copies of appropriate worksheets included in this PowerPoint presentation • www.infohio.org – Britannica Online School Edition • Project ALERT Minerals Exercise

  5. Process 1 • As a group, complete the 10 minute activity together. Be sure to answer the essential question on the lines at the top of your Research Collection Worksheet. • The groups have been chosen by your instructor. As a group, you will decide who will take on each role. All members of the group must take an active part in their role. • Once roles have been determined, each person will complete the specific tasks for their role. “Look” Expert “Hands-on” Expert “Strength” Expert • After the individual tasks have been completed, each person will “teach” their group members what they have learned. Process 2 • After each of you have taught your lessons to each other, you will work as a group to fill out the Mineral Collection Chart. • Once you feel comfortable with your answers, it is time to name each mineral based on its properties. Use the Mineral Identification Key to help you to name each mineral. • Put all group member’s names on the Mineral Collection Chart and turn it in to your teacher once you have your final copy finished. Turn in all Research Collection Worksheets with the Mineral Collection Chart. • Name that Mineral! should take 2-3 sixty minute sessions. Process 1

  7. 10 minute activity • Essential Question: What are the characteristics by which minerals are identified? • Search Steps: • Open Internet Browser. • Type the URL address www.infohio.org • Click on the Resources for Grades 6-8 button. • Click on the Britannica Online School Edition button. • Type in username and password, if necessary. (See media specialist for username and password) • Click on the same button as in Step 4. • Type the terms “mineral identification” in the search box. • Click on the article named Mineral Identification at the top of the page. • Read the article. • Once you have finished reading the article (to the bottom of the screen), answer the essential question.   8. “Look” Expert • You will become an expert on the “look” of the minerals, focusing on the luster and color of minerals. • Record the answers to each of the questions on your Research Collection Worksheet. Be sure to read everything on each site and look at all pictures. Add any notes to your answers, that you feel will help you to teach your group about luster and color. • Luster – Read about it on this site. What is the difference between metallic and non-metallic minerals? • Color – Read about it on this site. How do minerals get their color? • When you have answered both questions, begin examining the ten minerals for their luster and color. Once everyone in your group is finished, you will teach the others in the group about the luster and color of minerals. Process 1

  9. “Hands-on” Expert • You will become the “hands-on” expert of the minerals, focusing on the streak and cleavage of minerals. • Record the answers to each of the questions on your Research Collection Worksheet. Be sure to read everything on each site and look at all pictures. Add any notes to your answers, that you feel will help you to teach your group about streak and cleavage. • Streak – Read about it on this site. What is streak and what do you use to find it? • Cleavage – Read about it on this site. What is cleavage and how is it recorded? • When you have answered the questions, get a streak plate from your teacher. Begin examining the ten minerals for their streak and cleavage. Once everyone in your group is finished, you will teach the others in the group about the streak and cleavage of minerals. Process 1

  10. “Strength” Expert • You will become the expert on the “strength” of the minerals, focusing on the hardness of minerals. • Record the answers to each of the questions on your Research Collection Worksheet. Be sure to read everything on each site and look at all pictures. Add any notes to your answers, that you feel will help you to teach your group about hardness. • Hardness – Read about it on this site. What scale is used to measure the hardness of a mineral? What are the common objects used to measure the hardness of a mineral? • When you have answered the questions, get the hardness testing supplies from your teacher. Begin examining the ten minerals for their hardness. Once everyone in your group is finished, you will teach the others in the group about the hardness of minerals. Process 1

  17. Evaluation • Each individual student will be evaluated using the Name that Mineral! Rubric. • Group work will be incorporated into the individual grade for each student.

  19. Conclusion • Congratulations! You were able to name all ten minerals! As a group, you were able to put your heads together to collect all of the information you needed to name each mineral. Then, you organized your information into the chart and successfully used the Mineral Identification Key to help identify each mineral! Excellent teamwork!
