  13. Other Public School Districts to Consider… District of Columbia, Fairfax, Arlington, Alexandria, Loudoun

  14. Things to Keep in Mind When Deciding on Location • You must be able to secure your own transportation. • Please be flexible! The district makes placement decisions based on the availability of eligible site counselors and school district needs. • School districts not only have to place counselor interns, but other education-related professionals too.

  15. Other Requirements Prior to Internship • Complete or be in the process of completing all required coursework prior to internship (39 credits) • This includes Practicum in Counseling (Advanced Techniques) (Lab) • Note: you may take one elective concurrently with internship • Register for the Internship in School Counseling course (863.820). Registration occurs in July for the fall semester and November for the spring semester. Be prepared to settle tuition costs for your internship course each semester. Students will be informed of their course section, day and time so they may settle their tuition costs.

  16. Other Requirements Prior to Internship • Secure professional liability insurance and ensure that it will remain active throughout the course of your internship experience. (Available at a reduced rate to ACA members; Included with ASCA membership.) • ACA Insurance Trust website: www.acait.com • ASCA Insurance website: www.schoolcounselor.org/content.asp?contentid=185 • Update the Department and the school counseling field experiences coordinator of any changes to your email address, address or phone numbers. Be sure to also update your contact information in ISIS.

  17. Important Reminders! The Field Experience Coordinator is the liaison between the University and districts for internship placements. Students should not contact the district directly regarding placement. Students who are teachers or para-educators may not complete internships at their schools-of-employment . Be sure to contact your employer regarding leave requirements. This is usually your HR dept.

  18. Answers to FAQs • Working and Doing Internship • Internship requires students to be on-site at least two days a week as well as attend their weekly 2-hour internship class and fulfill the requirements of the course. The extent to which you can work and satisfy the internship requirements depends on the flexibility of your job schedule and other commitments in your life. Also be sure to check with your employer re: any leave requirements. • Changing District or Grade Levels • Once applications are sent to the districts, you cannot change what district or level you wish to apply to. Think carefully about this before you submit your application!

  19. Answers to FAQs cont… • Changing Semesters • If applications have not yet been mailed out to the districts, then yes, you can change the semester(s) you will complete your internship in. However, if applications have already been sent, you must contact the JHU Counseling Dept. Director for approval. Special circumstances with your work schedule may require you to change how many semesters or in which semester you will complete internship. • Changing School Placements • Placement changes are not permitted , except for health or disability concerns. • When You Can Start • You may begin accruing hours at your site 1 week prior to the start of the JHU academic semester with permission from your site supervisor. These can only be indirect hours. Direct hours may begin once your internship class starts.

  20. When Will I Find Out Where I’m Placed? • Anytime between the end of May and August 30thI may be receiving placement decisions from the various school districts. It depends on how soon your applications are received and how soon districts can confirm site supervisor availability. • As soon as I receive placement decisions from the school districts, I will send you an email with details regarding: • School, Address, Phone • Principal’s name • Site Supervisor’s name and email • You can then contact your site supervisor to establish a schedule that is compatible with theirs, and that assures that you will be able to complete your required hours.

  21. Requirements for Successful Completion of Internship • Complete 600 Hours (6 credits) in K-12 public school setting. Document your hours in a weekly log (Appendix G) for site and university supervisors’ approval • 240 hrs. of direct service (40%) • 360 hrs. of indirect service (60%) • Must be on-site a minimum of 2 full days per week • Meet with site supervisor weekly for 1 hour, for a minimum of ten individual sessions per semester

  22. Requirements for Successful Completion of Internship • 2 hours per week of university supervision (via your internship course) • Submission of internship forms (Appendix A-F) • Submission of two audio/visual tape recordings of work with students at site • Two Advocacy Projects • Completion of any other assignments given by your internship instructor • Complete School Counselor ePortfolio

  23. Evaluations and Forms • All internship forms including the weekly log template (Appendix G) will be available on ELC in the resources tab. • Site Supervisors will complete end of term intern evaluation electronically. • Any additional information needed for internship will be sent via email or made available on ELC.
