  2. Introduction Library being a service-oriented organisation is intended to meet the information requirements of the users. It provides different kinds of services such as current awareness service, selective dissemination of information, translation service, photocopying service etc. Photocopying service plays an important role in the dissemination of information in any university library, because it is very simple to operate, comparatively inexpensive copies can be made quickly again one can obtain a copy from original documents of any size. These advantages have found numerous applications in every place where documentary material is being used. All the useful information for a researcher can be provided from piles of documents and be made available to him as duplicate copies right on his working desk.

  3. Introduction ( cont..) The university library is a major source of information in the university, which it serves. It is responsible for the collection, organization, storage, retrieval and transmission of information related to the needs of the university departments. Without a well organized collection, a university library is like fighting without arms. Again no library can claim to meet its entire demands from its own resources due to enormous growth of publications and their rising cost. Therefore, emphasis is being laid for the well equipped libraries with all the modem gadgets which can be used to facilitate the quick supply of relevant and latest information for research. A systematic study of the services will help the managers of a library in a better management and providing better services, in following ways

  4. Introduction In planning the different services of the library on scientific lines; In decision making; In deciding the amount of work load; In making improvements in existing services; and In measuring the performance of the library.

OBJECTIVES A) the awareness and use of photocopying service; B) frequency of use of photocopying service and types of documents photocopied, and purpose/s of taking photocopies; C) the opinion on the size of paper used and single side v/s both sides of the paper; D) the opinion on the photocopying charges and quality of photocopies; E) whether the working hours of Xerox section convenient or not; F) the satisfaction of users with photocopying service and the extent of satisfaction; G) the use of photocopying service of other institutions; H) the difficulties faced in getting the photocopies; I) the reasons for not using the photocopying service; (J) the use of outside facilities for Photocopying; and (K) to suggest the measures to promote the use of photocopying service among research students in a university environment.

  6. SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS The present study confines itself to study the use of photocopying service by research students. The term research students includes M.Phil, Pre-Ph.D., Ph.D. students working in various department viz., Applied Electronics, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Botany, Chemistry, Commerce, Economics, Law, History, Kannada, Library and Information Science, Management, Marathi, Mathematics, Microbiology, Physics, Political Science, Psychology, Sanskrit, Social Works, Sociology, Urdu and Zoology of Gulbarga University, main campus, Gulbarga. Hence the scope of the study is confined to Gulbarga University, Gulbarga main campus only. The questionnaire method used for data collection has limitation.

  14. SUGGESTIONS AND CONCLUSION Many research scholars are not using the photocopying service of Gulbarga University Library, Gulbarga. So there is a need for user orientation to create better use of photocopying service of library. As the majority of research students are using photocopying service 'as and when needed', so there is a need for opening of xerox section for longer hours, As the majority of research scholars are photocopying articles from journals, hence there is a need for xerox facility machine in the periodical section. There is a need for more staff and more xerox machines. Although, the research scholars are satisfied with photocopying service but they are satisfied 'only to some extent', so there is need for improving the service. There is a need for timely supply of xerox papers and other materials required in the photocopying section by the administration.
