What Volunteers Do • Approximate 1-hour class presentation • Can present in as many classrooms as desiredl • Includes: • Self-introduction (5 min) • Short Presentation on Careers in STEM (10 min) • Slideshow templates available on Volunteer Resource Website • Activity to demonstrate how math and science are used (45 min) • Lots of K-12 activities available on Volunteer Resource Website

Tips For Presenting • Be Prepared • Prepare and practice your presentation • Establish Rapport Immediately with Students • Show keen interest in who they are • Ask opening questions and wait for answers “Look around the classroom – what was made by an engineer?” “What are some of your favorite things to do?” “How many of you have ever… done – seen -- thought about -- wondered about…?”

Tips For Presenting • Check In Often With Students • A quick check-in can be as simple as asking for a ‘thumbs up or thumbs down’ to show if they get it. • Involve and Engage Students Continually • Don’t be a talking head • Give every student something to do • Break the class up into teams and make it a competition • Have a prize for the winning team
