  1. La Follette – East OvercrowdingStudy Group March 7, 2012 Meeting #8 Final Recommendations

  2. Agenda • Review of Key Variables and Alternatives • Update on Nuestro Mundo’s Potential Move to Leased Space • Finalization of Recommendations to the Board of Education • Next Steps • Adjournment

  3. “Six Considerations” • Bus rides of 45 minutes or less • No more than one move every five years • Grandfathering Grades 4 and 5 • Maximum of 650 per elementary school • Avoid high concentrations of low-income • Walk-ability and neighborhoods

  4. Allis Criteria

  5. Kennedy Criteria

  6. NMCS Criteria

  7. Review of Key Variables • Allis building is currently 28 students over capacity • 7 over in 2016-17 • If NMCS moves, space is available at Allis • 15 classrooms open up • Kennedy is currently 39 over capacity • 60 over in 2016-17

  8. Review of Key Variables • Does NMCS move? • Not yet decided by MMSD and NMCS Boards • How much space should be used for 4K at Allis and/or Kennedy? • How much renovation should take place at Kennedy and/or Allis? • Timing of growth in Kennedy area is unknown • Overcrowding at Allis is expected to ease

  9. Update on Nuestro Mundo’s Potential Move to Leased Space • MMSD Board is scheduled to decide on moving NMCS to Maywood on March 26 • Result: We must make our recommendations without this decision being made • Two scenarios: • #1 – NMCS moves • #2 – NMCS stays at Allis • Plus other considerations

  10. Finalization of Recommendations to the Board of Education • Scenario #1 – NMCS stays • What happens at Kennedy? • What happens at Allis? • Scenario #2 – NMCS moves • What happens at Kennedy? • What happens at Allis? • Future considerations • Who should move in the future if needed? • New school along Sprecher Road • What else

  11. #1 -- NMCS stays at Allis… Renovations/room reassignments at Kennedy: • Short 39 seats now • Projected to be 60 over in 2016-17 • Rooms #102 and #103 could change from split of ⅓-⅔ to 50-50 by moving the wall ($120,000) • Move Room #102 for OT/PT and meeting room to the Kindergarten cubby room ($60,000) • Move Kindergarten cubbies to the hallway as lockers • Can OT/PT move upstairs to Room #218? • Gains 2 rooms with space for about 40 students • Still projected to be 20 over capacity in five years • Solution only for the immediate future… maybe a couple years

  12. Kennedy floor plan

  13. #1 – NMCS stays at Allis… Renovations/room reassignments at Allis: • Art room #99 divided into two classrooms with partial wall (est. $90,000) • Move PC’s in Computer/REACH room #208 into LMC (est. $50,000) • Gains 2 rooms with space for about 40 students • Impacts programs and overcrowding expected to ease • Should renovations take place?

  14. Allis floor plan - Basement Green circles = if Nuestro Mundo stays Red circles = if Nuestro Mundo moves

  15. Allis – 1st Floor

  16. Allis – 2nd Floor

  17. If Nuestro Mundo moves… Changes at Allis: • Opens up 15 rooms • 5 to 7 rooms needed for Allis specials and to alleviate overcrowding • 2 rooms for new 4K (about 60 4K students) • Leaves 6 to 8 open with space for 140 to 160 students • Would be 73% capacity next year if no additional students move in • No room renovations needed

  18. If Nuestro Mundo moves… Big questions for Kennedy: • If students move to Allis, which neighborhoods are reassigned? • If students move to Allis, should more be moved to make room for 4K at Kennedy? • If students don’t move to Allis, what renovations are needed to alleviate overcrowding? • Resolves overcrowding for immediate future… maybe only a couple of years

  19. Kennedy Neighborhoods 85 4K students in Kennedy area today

  20. Future Considerations • Regardless of NMCS move, what should happen beyond renovations? • If a move from Kennedy to Allis is needed in the future, which neighborhoods should the Board consider? • What do we want to say about a new school along Sprecher Road? What else?

  21. Next Steps • Communication of Study Group recommendations to Kennedy families on March 9 • Planning & Development on March 12 • Info session for Kennedy families on March 20 • Feedback and suggested changes to the Board on March 26 • Board decision on NMCS on March 26 • Info session for Allis and NMCS families TBD

  22. Adjournment and Thanks!
