  2. The Break In • Watergate scandal- Nixon’s attempt to cover up burglary of DNC HQ at Watergate by Committee to Reelect the Pres. (CREEP) • In 1972 reelection campaign Nixon sought any advantage, including stealing info from DNC • 5 burglars caught, leader was former CIA agent working for CREEP • Cover-up began quickly

  3. Nixon reelected in landslide as global peacemaker • Woodward and Bernstein of Washington Post continued to research scandal • In trial of burglars, discovered White House involvement

  4. Discover that Nixon had taped all of his presidential conversations for his memoirs • In Saturday Night Massacre he forced attorney general to fire the special prosecutor for Watergate • Nixon refused to release tapes

  5. Resignation • Nixon finally released edited tapes • Just before he faced 3 charges of impeachment, Nixon resigned • 1st Pres. to resign from office

  6. Watergate’s Legacy • 25 members of Nixon Admin. convicted and served prison terms for crimes • One of Gerald Ford’s first acts as Pres. was to pardon Nixon • Left legacy of cynicism about public officials
