  2. What is Watergate? • Political scandal in the 1970’s • Break in of Democratic National Committee • Headquarters at the Watergate office complex • Indictment and conviction of several Nixon administration officials • Led to the resignation of President Richard Nixon • Occurred

  3. Who Was Involved? President Nixon arrest of five men for breaking and entering into the Democratic National Committee headquarters Nixon had a tape recording system in his offices Recordings implicated the president attempted to cover up the break-in

  4. The Break-in At Watergate • June 17, 1972 • five men arrested inside Democratic National Committee's office • Virgilio González, Bernard Barker, James W. McCord, Jr., Eugenio Martínez, and Frank Sturgis • Convicted for conspiracy, burglary, and violation of federal wiretapping laws • Convicted on January 30, 1973 • tied to the 1972 Committee to Re-elect the President

"Saturday Night Massacre" • Special prosecutor Archibald Cox • Cox's refusal to drop his subpoena from the tapes • December 7, a 18½ minute portion of one tape was found to have been erased • Rose Mary Woods, said she had accidentally erased the tape by pushing the wrong foot pedal • Later forensic analysis determined that the tape had been erased in several segments — at least five • perhaps as many as nine

  6. The New Tape August 3, 1974 The previously unknown audio tape was released Documented Nixon and Haldeman meeting in the Oval Office Formulating a plan to block investigations by the CIA

  7. Reason For The Break-in • has never been conclusively established • Some theories suggest that the burglars were after specific information • Numerous theories have persisted in claiming deeper significance to the Watergate scandal
