  1. NSIS QoS Model for Networks Using Y.1541 QoS Classes (draft-ash-nsis-y1541-qsp-00.txt) Jerry Ash gash@att.com Yacine El Mghazli yacine.el_mghazli@alcatel.fr Martin Dolly mdolly@att.com Al Morton acmorton@att.com Chuck Dvorak cdvorak@att.com Percy Tarapore tarapore@att.com

  2. Outline(draft-ash-nsis-y1541-qsp-00.txt) • QoS model (QOSM) based on ITU-T Recommendation Y.1541 • optional QSPEC parameters • <token bucket> parameters • peak bucket size [Bb] • sustainable rate [Rs] • <restoration priority> parameter • <Y.1541 QOS Class Flag> • next steps

  3. Y.1541-QOSM • Y.1541-QOSM based on ITU-T Recommendation Y.1541 • Recommendation Y.1541 • "Network Performance Objectives for IP-Based Services," May 2002 • specifies 6 QoS service classes • specific objectives for delay, delay variation, loss for each class • Recommendation TRQ-QoS-SIG • "Signaling Requirements for IP-QoS," January 2005 • specifies requirements for signaling IP-QoS information based on Y.1541 QoS classes • specify optional QSPEC parameters & RMF processing to enable Y.1541-QOSM

  4. Y.1541 QoS Classes • Class 0: • mean delay <= 100 ms, delay variation <= 50 ms, loss ratio <= 10-3 • real-time, highly interactive applications, sensitive to jitter • application examples: VoIP, video teleconference • Class 1 • mean delay <= 400 ms, delay variation <= 50 ms, loss ratio <= 10-3 • real-time, interactive applications, sensitive to jitter • application examples: VoIP, video teleconference • Class 2 • mean delay <= 100 ms, delay variation unspecified, loss ratio <= 10-3 • highly interactive transaction data • application examples: signaling • Class 3 • mean delay <= 400 ms, delay variation unspecified, loss ratio <= 10-3 • interactive transaction data • application examples: signaling

  5. Y.1541 QoS Classes • Class 4 • mean delay <= 1 sec, delay variation unspecified, loss ratio <= 10-3 • low loss only applications • application examples: short transactions, bulk data, video streaming • Class 5 • mean delay unspecified, delay variation unspecified, loss ratio unspecified • unspecified applications • application examples: traditional best-effort applications of IP networks

  6. Y.1541-QOSM Requirements • MUST be possible to specify • Y.1541 QoS class • peak data rate (p) • peak bucket size (Bp) • sustainable rate (Rs) • sustainable bucket size (b) • token bucket rate (r) • maximum allowed packet size (M) • DiffServ field [RFC 2474] • reservation priority • restoration priority • all QSPEC parameters except <Bp>, <Rs>, <Restoration Priority> already specified in [QSPEC] • MUST be possible to • accumulate delay, delay variation & loss ratio across end-to-end path (may span multiple domains) • negotiate Y.1541 QoS class across domains • negotiate delay, delay variation, & loss ratio across domains

  7. Y.1541-QOSM • additional optional QSPEC parameters • <token bucket> parameters • peak bucket size [Bb] • sustainable rate [Rs] • <restoration priority> parameter • high, normal, best effort • <Y.1541 QOS Class Flag> • set to 1 if Y.1541 QoS Class constraints cannot be met

  8. Next Steps • progress draft as Informational RFC with feedback & review by NSIS WG • propose to make an NSIS WG draft
