  5. Student Survey School-level • One version can be administered to 6, 8, 10, and 12 grade students • Fresno County will administer to 8th grade Languages English Only Fresno County has translated local version into Spanish Overview

Active Consent MUST be used No child can be surveyed without written permission from the parent The challenge with active consent is ensuring that parents receive and return the forms to the school With active consent, the teacher is the key Provides extra protection against surveying a student whose parents do not approve Consent

  9. Passive Consent Written notice is sent to parents about the survey, who in turn notify the school only if they do NOT want their child to participate The challenge with passive consent is ensuring that parents are fully notified Passive consent is NOT to be used for this survey Consent

  11. School Perception Survey Provided to all schools in the Student Survey sample To all certificated staff working grades 6-8 Encourage staff participation to at least 60% Survey emailed out October 9, 2008 Staff participation is VOLUNTARY Staff Survey

  12. School Perception Survey Topics Do school personnel believe there is a gang problem in their school? Does this vary according to type of school personnel? What types of problems do gang members present on the school campus? What issues are contributing to gang activity in the school? Approximately eight questions Staff Survey

  13. How the Staff Survey Works Online survey given two weeks prior to Student Survey District Contact will receive email with web-link and instructions to forward to staff Reminder email to complete surveys will go out 5 days before end of survey period (October 31, 2008) Staff Survey

  15. Notify Parents and Obtain Consent Consent option: active Develop, distribute and monitor letters to parents Make the survey available to the public • Front office hard copy • County website • School website (optional) • District website (optional) Admin Process

Review of Responsibilities DISTRICT/SCHOOL - Local site coordination and survey scheduling - Distribution, collection, & tracking of parent consent forms - Mailing of answer sheets to CSUF Principal Investigator (county provides return envelope) - Receive, read and utilize the report at the local level • COUNTY • - Printing of surveys • - Staff training • Provision of data for aggregated county dataset • Receive, read and utilize the report at the county level 25
