OYGPI Vision Statement The Ottawa Youth Gang Prevention Initiative (OYGPI) aims to support youth and families to prevent youth from becoming involved in gang activity and to reduce and prevent the harmful effects of youth gangs in Ottawa through a collaborative, holistic, evidence-based strategy of prevention and intervention.

Four Components for a Youth Gang Strategy • Healthy Neighbourhood Cohesion • Building positive relationships in gang affected neighbourhoods to reduce fear and strengthen the community fabric. • Prevention • Activities, programs and supports which seek to positively engage young people with their families, their schools and their community before they are attracted to gang life. • Intervention • Programming that engages with youth who are involved or beginning to be involved in youth gang activity. • Suppression • Targeted enforcement aimed at gang activity.

  8. Research • Report • “Community Cohesion and Youth Gang Prevention in Six Priority Areas” • Based on 6 asset/needs analysis, interviews of researchers, EDI data and best practices research • Utilizes 4 Component Framework: Healthy Neighbourhood Cohesion, Prevention, Intervention, Suppression

Priorities within Priorities • 2 Priority Areas: (South-East and West) in • greatest distress. • Implement more programs for the children in the 6 to 12 year age • Meaningfully engage and empower youth in the planning, development, and delivery of programs. • John Howard Society & Youth Services Bureau

Life Course and Youth Gang Involvement • Katharine Kelly – Carleton University • Considers the factors over the course of a young person’s life that contributed to their becoming involved in youth gangs. • The focus is on their involvement/experiences with the major social institutions: (i) the family, (ii) school, (iii) health/mental health, (iv) the community, and (v) the criminal justice system. • We need warm referrals – can you help?
