  2. The Subjunctive Tense • The subjunctive tense is used to express either a direct or an indirect command. • 2. The subjunctive tense is also needed when a sentence has an expression of emotion, doubt or volition + que + a change of subject – then the next verb is subjunctive.

  3. Steps to conjugate in the Subjunctive • The stem is the “yo”form from the present indicative without the “o”. • ie...hablar - hablo • 2. Add the “opposite”endings. • *Watch out for orthographic stem changes in the subjunctive!

  6. Irregular Verbs (d.i.s.h.e.s.) These verbs have irregular stems but regular endings in the subjunctive tense: dar ir ser haber dé vaya sea haya des vayas seas hayas dé vaya sea haya demos vayamos seamos hayamos den vayan sean hayan

  7. Irregular Verbs These verbs have irregular because of accents in the subjunctive tense: estar saber esté sepa estés sepas esté sepa estemos sepamos estén sepan

Stem Changing Verbs The subjunctive tense is the only tense that has a stem change in the nosotros form but: only IR verbs and only only one letter dormir (ue)pedir (i) encontrar (ue) duerma pida encuentre duermas pidas encuentres duerma pida encuentre durmamos pidamos encontremos duerman pidan encuentren

  9. Sentence Examples • Yo quiero que tú estudies más. • I want you to study more. • Juan duda que tú lo sepas. • Juan doubts that you know it. • Es una lástima que no vengas. • It is a shame that you aren’t coming.
