  1. Is honesty always the best policy? Should children younger than ten be sheltered from ‘grown up’ issues such as death and murder? Is complete honesty always the best policy? Or is it best to lie a little?

  2. Innocence To explore the character of Buckley Salmon “Had my brother really seen me somehow, or was he merely a little boy telling beautiful lies?”

  3. ‘Where’s Susie?’ Buckley is sheltered from the reality of Susie’s death for a while. After her murder, he is sent to stay at his friend Nate’s house. He repeatedly asks ‘Where’s Susie?’. Was it right of Jack and Abigail to shelter him from the harsh realities of his sister’s death?

  4. Looking closely at representations of speech on pages 68/69, write two PEE paragraphs to describe how Buckley’s innocence is conveyed in the extract below Tip: use your ‘questions for analysing texts’

  5. Re-read pages 46-48 How does Buckley’s life change after Susie’s death? How does his role within the family change? Aiming for an A? What might Jack’s ships symbolise in the text?

  6. When Buckley is a little older, he takes up gardening as a hobby. What does this tell us about his personality? Why might this be symbolic?

  7. Page 256 Here Buckley is 12. How is his anger/frustration conveyed through representations of speech and other narrative techniques?
