  1. Superintendent’s Report to the Board of Directors Thursday October 8, 2009

  2. Noteworthy • Charter Renewal is 100% complete and we are renewed through June 30, 2014 • 613 students currently enrolled (highest enrollment ever) • The 21st Century Community Learning Center MIDDLE SCHOOL grant has been formally awarded. OMI received $285,500 annually for five years • The grant pays for summer programs • Before school homework help and science club • After school homework help, athletics, art, music, etc

  3. Noteworthy Part Two • OMI has partnered with Merritt College to offer community college classes on the OMI campus beginning in the Spring semester of 2010 • Smartboards installed in all classrooms and a “sympodium” in Battalion Hall • New “whizbang” web site at www.oakmil.org, including board information

  4. Measurable Pupil Outcomes - MPOs • See handout with 16 MPOs • It is the legal responsibility of the board to hold the OMI administration responsible for meeting these MPOs and to regularly monitor OMI’s progress • At each meeting, we will update you and the public on our MPO Progress and answer questions

  5. Board Policy Manual • A first draft of the manual has been presented. • In the coming month, please review it and note any questions, concerns, suggested changes, etc. • At the November meeting, we will go through each policy and, if the board so desires, approve the manual

  6. 2009-2010 Budget Update • No action needed on this today; info only • Increased ADA and conservatively estimated 85% (annually we have averaged 92%) • Added SFSF and 21CCLC funds • Changed lottery to reflect state estimates • Added Smartbaord donations to restricted • Updated staffing to reflect realities

  7. Food Service Contract • OMI went through a competitive bid process last Spring to select a food service vendor for breakfast and lunch • New Era Foods was the low bidder and we signed a contract with them • During the summer, their performance was substandard and we opted out of the contract with support from counsel • We went with the next lowest bidder, San Lorenzo Unified (Good Day Café) with whom we had been doing business for a couple of years previously

  8. Facilities Grant • Office of Public School Construction has charter school grants that consist of 50% “grant” and 50% low/no cost loans for 30 years • We applied for a $19.4 million grant and it is currently winding its way through the state process • If awarded, would pay for replacing existing portables with two story modular structures, renovation/replacement of existing Annex (possibly with a gym)

  9. Understanding OMI’s Governance

  10. Operations and Discipline • Cafeteria Remodel phase 1 underway (removal of old equipment, installation of a new stove and fire suppression system) • Participating in Pleasanton Vet’s Day Parade and Oakland Holiday Parade (250 cadets each) • Emphasis on prep for physical fitness testing (goal tracking) • Rubrics for Student Leaders • Five expulsions so far (all for drugs – four HS, one MS; one additional pending hearing)
