Opposing Sides • Federalists – supported Constitution • Liked power between national/state • Supporters – large land owners, merchants, artisans • Antifederalists – misleading name • Not completely against Constitution • Worried over who would have most power • Supporters – backcountry farmers • Samuel Adams – needs Bill of Rights

  3. The Federalist Papers • Federalists – very organized • The Federalist – 85 essays • summarized argument • purpose – to get NY to ratify Constitution • writers – James Madison, John Jay, Alexander Hamilton • Used today by judges/lawyers to help interpret Constitution

  4. Fight to Ratify • Federalist support in Delaware, Penn, NJ, CT, GA • MA – largely Antifederalist • Promised to add Bill of Rights • 1788 – SC & NH ratify • Still wanted VA & NY to ratify • VA agreed after Bill of Rights promised

  5. New York • Jay & Hamilton delayed vote • News of NH & VA votes means Constitution now law • Weird position if they voted no • Passed with 30-27 vote

  6. Last Two • NC – ratified after Bill of Rights • RI – waited almost 2 years

  7. Nervous Times • Many worried new govt. would not work • Others were confident b/c George Washington picked as 1st President
