  6. challenges E Q U I T Y • Inadequate faculty – only 114 faculty positions could be filled out of 202 sanctioned posts. • Inadequate and insufficiently trained supporting technical staff (REC Staff) • Non availability of proper bandwidth in network – the sanctioned bandwidth of NKN Network is 1.16 GBPS. However, on an average only 60 to 70 MBPS bandwidth is available for the last six months, thereby causing lot of difficulty in getting learning material though Network. • Work culture is still driven by old REC legacy.

A T T I T U D E opportunities • Socio economic condition of the region provides ample opportunity for imparting training in community service to the student. • As such under GyanSagar Scheme of NSS, the students of NITS imparted coaching in science, mathematics and Information technology to more than 500 underprivileged students of the locality. • Establish a World Class Community College for NE rural development in tourism, food processing, IT sector, mason, plumber, electrician, automobile mechanics, refrigeration & Air conditioning. • Scope of innovating new products/processes/designs and acquire patents by tapping natural resources available at various parts of the country in particular in Assam and North eastern region. • Scope of establishing centre of excellence & advance studies to provide world class education in North East. • International and national collaborations and joint ventures

  8. threats • Lack of proper communication facilities through Road/Rail resulted in slower development of infrastructure at NIT Silchar. • Remote location detracts brilliant students from joining NIT Silchar. • Lack of good faculty due to location. • No industries in North East • Insurgency

  10. Skill development V A L U E S • NITS association with Barak Valley Pineapple Growers Association will open new avenues for skills development & generate employment opportunities in the entire NE region. • Handicrafts • Food Processing Units

  11. Photochemical machining O P T I M I S T I C Institute has initiated R&D projects in collaboration with Bamboo & Cane Development Institute, Agartala and Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai.

  12. Solar power plant U N I T Y • Solar Photo Voltaic Power Plant: Institute has set up 100 Kwp Solar Photo Voltaic Power Plant in collaboration with MNRE, Govt. of India during the year 2012-13. • 200 nos. of Solar Street light have been installed in the Campus having 1100 watt.

  14. Micro-Nano manufacturing laboratory R E S E A R C H • Dr. Anil Kakodkar, inaugurated the laboratory at NIT Silchar on 17th June,2012.

Tele-medicine • To provide specialized health care services • to • the rural population in Silchar, Assam, C-DAC, Mohali is establishing Telemedicine Consultation Centers (TCC) at NIT Silchar & • two villages on a pilot basis. • It is proposed to establish TCC at 3 locations namely • Cachar Cancer Hospital & Research Centre (specialist node) CCHC, • Babutilla/Madhutilla (remote node) • & • Tukagram/Bhanga (remote node) at Silchar.

Digital campus by eth • MOU with Dr. Vijay Bhatkar’s ETH to undertake ‘Digital Campus’ • ‘Digital Campus’ helps take education at a new level • Complete digitization of school activities • Facilitates easy communication between parents and teachers • Launch of online Parent Portal and Student Portals • Ease and convenience for school, parents and students
