  5. Native Americans Today Now most of the Native Americans live in three states: California, Arizona and Oklahoma.

  6. 1492 The coming of Columbus Columbus "discovered" the New World in 1492 and claimed it for Spain. He was sent by King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain. He landed somewhere in the Bahama Islands. The native Americans there were called Arawaks.

  7. What happened to the Arawaks? Some Arawaks were made slaves by the Europeans. Others got European diseases and died. Look at what happened to them: 1494 250,000 Arawaks • 1515 50,000 Arawaks 1560 500 Arawaks

  10. From England In 1579, Sir Francis Drake landed in Central California. From 1585-1590 Roanoke colony was established by Sir Walter Raleigh in N. Carolina, but it died out. This 16th century ring was found near Roanoke Island where the colony was supposed to have been.

  11. From Spain…(besides Columbus) 1520 Coronadoentered the Southwest and took Indians as slaves. 1598 Don Juan de Onate founded and settled New Mexico
