  2. State Standard • We are cover the following standard: • 11.1 Students analyze the significant events in the founding of the nation and its attempts to realize the philosophy of government described in the Declaration of Independence.

  3. States rights ( fear of government) • The Articles of Confederation • First form of government for the new nation • State held most of the power • Weak Central Government

  4. Weakness: • Central Government could not collect monies to settle debt: (60,000,000) • Shay’s Rebellion • Thomas Jefferson to express the view that "a little rebellion now and then is a good thing" for America. One vote per state regardless of size • Congress could not collect taxes • Could not regulate trade • No Executive • No Court

  5. Restructuring the Government • In 1787 representatives from the thirteen states came to Philadelphia to design new government: • Three Branch System Bicameral legislation: Senate and the House of Representatives • Check and balances

  6. Ratification: • Federalist vs. Anti-Federalist • Bill of Right: clearly state the rights and privileges of Americans: 1st Ten Amed.. • 1789 George Washington elected 1st president.

The Constitution of the United States of AmericaPre-amble • We the people of the United States, in order to form a more perfect union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.
