  1. 1-1 “What is a Mineral?” Explain the characteristics of a mineral. Describe the two main types of minerals.

  2. Mineral – a naturally formed, inorganic solid, with crystalline structure. • Is it a solid? • Is it formed in nature? • Is it a nonliving material? • Does it have crystal structure?

  3. Elements • Elements are pure substances that can not be broken down any further by ordinary chemical means. • Atom – smallest form of an element. • Compound – two or more elements chemically bonded together.

  4. Crystals • Solid, geometric forms of minerals produced by a repeating pattern of atoms throughout the material.

  5. Silicate Minerals – contain both silicon and oxygen 90% of all materials found on earth are silicate minerals Nonsilicate minerals – May contain either silicon or oxygen, but not both. Native Elements, carbonates, halides, oxides, sulfates, sulfides Types of Minerals
