Project: IEEE P802.15 Working Group for Wireless Personal Area Networks (WPANs) Submission Title: 802.15.4 High(er) Rate Date Submitted: Sept. 2015 Source: Clint Powell, Powell Wireless Commsulting, LLC Contact: Clint Powell, Powell Wireless Commsulting, LLC Voice: +1 480-586-8457, E-Mail: cpowell@ieee.org Re: Developing a 802.15.4 High(er) Rate PHY Amendment Abstract: Development of a 802.15.4 High(er) Rate amendment with minimal changes to 802.15.4 spec. Purpose: To support higher data rates that are more compatible with 32 bit processors Notice: This document has been prepared to assist the IEEE P802.15. 2. 802.15.4 High(er) Rate

  3. Proposal • A 802.15.4 amendment providing a higher rate PHY, compatible with the original 250 kbps O-QPSK PHY.

  4. Motivation • In 2003 when 802.15.4 was initially released the 250 kbps data rate was a good fit for the 8 bit microprocessors technology of the day • Jump ahead to 2015, 10+ years later – and 32 bit microprocessors are commonly used when implementing 802.15.4 • Over-the-air data rates for 802.15.4 have increased since then, but… • a higher over-the-air data rate PHY, that is 8-10x that of the original 250 kbps PHY, and is backwards compatible with the original 250 kbpsO-QPSK PHY has not been developed

  5. What is Needed/What are the Benefits • A higher over-the-air data rate 802.15.4 PHY that: • is 8-10x the over-the-air data rate of the original250 kbps O-QPSK PHY (resulting in lower energy and air time per message and increased capacity of the channel) • is backwards compatible with the original250 kbps O-QPSK PHY • has the same occupied bandwidth as the original250 kbps O-QPSK PHY • is capable of simple implementation • is a minimal addition/change to the 802.15.4 standard
