  7. Poor Dave! • With 10 scores, he has a 56! How many “hundreds” does he need to bring his average back up to 70? Two? Four? More? • If Dave scores a 100 on each of the next five assignments, then his total average is 70.7 ! • Wow… It takes five HUNDREDS to cancel out only 2 zeros if his average was a 70. • WHAT DOES THIS TELL YOU ?!?!?!?

  8. CONCLUSIONS? • Each 100 will bring up your average…but not as much a ZERO brings it down! • Two zeros bring it waaaaaaaay down! • What if you have several zeros… • Your average? • Time is shorter than you think! • Don’t fall behind!

  9. Nine-Weeks Grade • CW 30% HW 10% T 60% • CW = 80 HW = 100 T = 50 Grade = ? • .3 × 80 + .10 × 100 + .6 × 50 = • 24 + 10 + 30 = 64 Pass “D” • Find Grade: CW 70 HW 50 T 60 • .3 × 70 + .10 × 50 + .6 × 60 = • 21 + 5 + 36 = 62 Pass “D”

  10. Nine-Weeks Grade • CW 30% HW 10% Test 60% • Grade? CW 60 HW 0 Test 70 • .3 × 60 + .1 × 0 + .6 × 70 = • 18 + 0 + 42 = 60 “D” Pass… but close! • Grade? CW 70 HW 0 Test 60 • .3 × 70 + .1 × 0 + .6 × 60 = • 21 + 0 + 36 = 57 Uh-oh!!! Not enough!! • Conclusions?

  11. FINAL AVERAGE: • Each semester counts half of your course grade. Add ‘em up, divide by two. • Within each semester, each nine weeks counts 45% and a midterm (first semester) or final (second semester) counts 10%. • DANGER: If you goof around during the first semester, you’ll have to work twice as hard the second semester… or, if you’ve really botched things… it may not matter!

Calculate Final Average • 1st 9 ws: 72 2nd 9 wks: 58 Midterm: 64 • .45 × (72 + 58) + .1 × 64 = • 64.9 (which is really a 65) • 3rd 9 wks: 52 4th 9 wks: 60 Final: 48 • .45 × (52 + 60) + .1 × 48 = • 55.2 Total: (55 + 65) ÷ 2 = 60 • (60 + 65) ÷ 2 = 62.5 (may round to 63) • Whew! Passing… but just barely!

Calculate Final Average • 1st 9 ws: 52 2nd 9 wks: 58 Midterm: 54 • .45 × (52 + 58) + .1 × 54 = • 54.9 (STI should round to 55?) • 3rd 9 wks: 62 4th 9 wks: 60 Final: 96 • .45 × (62 + 60) + .1 × 96 = • 64.5 With rounding, (55 + 65) ÷ 2 = 60 . • BUT… Look at that final exam grade! Anything less than a 96… student does NOT pass!

  14. CONCLUSIONS? • DO THE WORK AND TURN IT IN! • ZEROs will KILL your grade! • Don’t Fall Behind! • Re-take a test, if you need to, to bring up your grade-point average! • Get help when you need it! (I’m here every morning and afternoon.)
