Metaphor: A word or phrase for one thing that is used to refer to another thing in order to show or suggest that they are similar • For example, in The Curious Incident, Christopher gives some examples of metphors like: “I laughed my socks off. He was the apple of her eye. They had a skeleton in the cupboard” (15) • Christopher does not like metaphors. Why is this? (Pair and share)

Simile: A comparison between two things using “like” or “as” for the purpose of description • For example, Christopher uses a simile of page 17 in The Curious Incident when he describes the hairy nostrils of the police officer. He says, “It looked as if there were two very small mice hiding in his nostrils” (17).
