  1. Proposed Curriculum Changes in the Civil Engineering ProgramCurt B. Haselton, PhD, PEChair and Associate Professor Department of Civil EngineeringCalifornia State University, Chico

  2. Purpose • Purpose of this Presentation: • Just for fun, since I do not get to teach any classes this semester… • To explain the recent CIVL curriculum revision. • To explain how this affects you and what classes you take.

  3. Goals of CIVL Curriculum Revision • Revise curriculum to: • Play to the strengths of the current faculty. • Improve it and strengthen the courses for each of the sub-disciplines. • Reduce units by four (this is being done in all Departments of the College, to weather the budget storm). • Meet ABET need for senior capstone.

  4. CE Freshman Year: Original

  5. CE Freshman Year: Proposed

  6. CE Freshman Year: Comparison • CIVL 110/131: Combine into CIVL 140 • Professor Scolaro saw synergy between course content. • CIVL 101: New Intro. To CE Course. • CIVL 175: Create a new GE • Current NSCI 102 does not meet needs of CIVL students. • **Opportunity to get into the GE Sustainability Pathway.

  7. CE Sophomore Year: Original

  8. CE Sophomore Year: Proposed

  9. CE Sophomore Year: Comparison • CIVL 205: • Increase to 3-units. • Strengthen the programming content in the course and add Matlab.

  10. CE Junior Year: Original

  11. CE Junior Year: Proposed

  12. CE Junior Year: Comparison • EECE 211: Remove from CE curriculum • Only ½ of CE programs surveyed require Circuits. • Students get some content in PHYS 204B. • CIVL 461: See senior year. • CIVL 302: Recreate class - “Engineering Risk and Economic Analysis.”

  13. CE Junior Year: Comparison • CIVL 312: We love this class, but this was the “sacrificial lamb” to support the other curriculum improvements (i.e. adding CIVL 175 and 461).

  14. CE Senior Year: Original

  15. CE Senior Year: Proposed

  16. CE Senior Year: Comparison • CIVL 461: Create a new CE hydraulics course (shown later) • Important CE topic; play to strengths of current faculty (Mehl). • CIVL 402 turned into a Senior Capstone Design Experience (CIVL 595): • Take the combination of two courses with a common comprehensive design project. Explain… • Free elective: Removed. We are engineers….

  17. How Does this Affect What Classes I Take? • The approach is as follows: • You pick either Plan A (the old plan) or Plan B (the new plan). • You have allowable substitutions that are pre-approved by the CE faculty for whatever plan you choose (to be discussed now). • The substitutions cover the transition period where we are phasing out the old courses and phasing in the new courses.

  18. Courses Phasing in and Out • Fall 2011: • CIVL 175 introduced • CIVL 205 and 302 updated • CIVL 110 and 312 no longer offered • Spring 2012: • CIVL 140 introduced • CIVL 402 transitioned to CIVL 595 • Fall 2012: • CIVL 101 introduced • CIVL 461 introduced

  19. Pre-Approved Course Substitutions • These are a bit confusing. • Once you pick Plan A or Plan B, then you can use the pre-approved substitutions as you like. • Plan A:

  20. Pre-Approved Course Substitutions • These are a bit confusing. • Once you pick Plan A or Plan B, then you can use the pre-approved substitutions as you like. • Plan B:

  21. Some Suggestions for You • Take advantage of the new curriculum as much as you can. • Take CIVL 175 instead of NSCI 102. • Take something in place of Circuits. • When the new GE is introduced in Fall 2012, take advantage of what the College of Engineering is doing in the Sustainability Pathway. Explain… • Meet personally with your academic advisor if you have any specific questions (or ask them today!). The one-on-one meeting is not required this year, but is still a good idea.

  22. Some Notes • This new curriculum is proposed (not yet formally approved) and may undergo some minor changes in the future. • The course matrix will be updated slightly before being posted (order of courses) and may have some affected on the order of CE electives being offered (heads-up). • Advising materials will be posted on the CE website once they are all finalized. • Graduation clearance form: Now use the Degree Progress Report on your Portal.

  23. Upcoming Events • CE Madison Bear night – Date TBD • CE Student BBQ – Date TBD

  24. Graduate School • Think about the possibility of graduate school. • Question: How will you be different from others in your field in 2030?

  25. Questions? Suggestions? • Question about all of this? • Some student here to help also. • Suggestions regarding CE Department? Please let me know (today or come by my office)!
