  1. Managing Self

  2. Introduction Management is not a term coined for managers alone. Just like leadership is not just for leaders. We all manage, and we all lead; these are not actions reserved for only those people who happen to hold these “positions” in a company. In fact self-governance or self-management is the key to one’s success. Let’s see how we can manage ourselves better. This module comprises of some tips, techniques and exercises that will help you manage your emotions, feelings and relationships effectively.

  3. This module is divided into 5 topics: • Knowing Thyself • Managing Negative Emotions • Facing Setbacks with Courage • Staying Motivated • Living with Enthusiasm

  4. 1. Knowing Thyself The first and foremost step for self-management is to know your self better. We may sometimes say to ourselves “I know me very well, inside out!!” that’s true to a certain extent. However; be mindful of the fact that all human beings have a ‘blind spot’ somewhere and we are unaware of it. There are some techniques to help you discover these blind spots and know yourselves better. Let us now, examine two such techniques: • SWOT Analysis • Johari Window

  5. SWOT Analysis SWOT is a tool for self discovery. The more we discover our self , more avenues open up to succeed in life. To know about this technique of self discovery, first read the word document attached and later take up the exercise to do an analysis on your self. Click the icon to read the article After you read the article, click the icon to take the exercise to do a SWOT analysis on your self.

  6. Johari Window This is yet another tool that helps you to discover the blind spots and uncover them. To take the exercise, click here.

  7. 2. Managing Negative Emotions“It’s not what happens to you , but how you react that matters.”- Epictetus Introduction: As the leader of any group, problems are inevitable. So…how do you react? Do you lead with your gut…or your head? This is the dilemma that most people face. When problems arise at work, one can choose to react with either impulse or reason. As each situation plays out, the better reaction is clear. Viewers recognize that how you react often has a far greater impact—on morale, on retention, on productivity—than any specific problem ever could. The key to managing other people is learning how to manage you. Few negative emotions we need to manage are: anger, frustration, jealousy, desperation, fear, worry, anxiety etc.

  8. Key Learning Points • Don’t attack. Teach. • Don’t take sides. Mediate. • Don’t blame. Solve. • Don’t close doors. Open doors. • Don’t argue. Negotiate. • Don’t avoid. Confront.

  9. If you practice and implement the above strategies in your life, you can manage both work and personal life effectively. Let’s see how we can do this: • When someone makes a mistake…..do not attack but teach them something new. • When there is a disagreement among a group of people………do not take sides. Instead mediate and look at the end objective of the discussion. • When a threat/challenge arises because of a personal folly……..do not blame, but solve the issue. • When trying to make a point or to create a buy in for an argument…….do not close the doors, open them for suggestions and opinions. • When there is a difference of opinion…….respond calmly to an angry confrontation and negotiate a satisfactory solution. • When faced with a challenge…….do not avoid the problem, confront it with confidence.

  10. Agree to Disagree:“The only way to get the best out of an argument, is to avoid it”- Dale Carnegie Words to avoid: • “You’re wrong” • “That is so stupid” • “You have absolutely no idea” • “No” • “That’s incorrect” Words to be used: • “I appreciate your view on the subject, however……” • “Lets look at this issue from a different angle…..” • “The other side of the story is that…..” • “I get your point, now lets see the other side of the coin…” • “Ok, I’ve heard you. Now please listen to what I have to say about this…”
