  2. Welcome back to Year 13! • Some excellent results • A few disappointing ones – what do students need to do to improve? • This is the most important year of student’s academic life • Role models – top of the school • Uniform • Attendance & Punctuality • Behaviour/attitude

Difference between AS and A2 • Harder modules (often longer exams) • Same weighting as AS in terms of UMS • In some cases similar to degree level study • No timetabled study periods • Registration as normal for now… • Any student with clear days or no lessons till Period 4 MUST see Mr Delf or Mrs Warwick for permission to come in later in the day • A2 is harder so the AS grade is not an automatic predictor of the final A Level grade

  6. UMS not Grades • Unless students are continuing on an AS subject (or have picked a new one up) you can now IGNORE the grade! • UMS scores are the important factor • See the additional sheet for guidance

  7. The grade next to your UMS scores can be ignored Module 1 Module 2 (PSYA1) (PSYA2) 76 (b) 68 (c) Total: 144 At AS you need the following UMS for grades: 2 Module AS 3 Module AS (out of 200) (out of 300) A= 160 A= 240 B= 140 B= 210 C= 120 C= 180 D= 100 D= 150 E= 80 E= 120

UMS at A Level At A Level you need the following UMS for grades: 4 Module A2 6 Module A2 (out of 400) (out of 600) A= 320 A= 480 B= 280 B= 420 C= 240 C= 360 D= 200 D= 300 E= 160 E= 240 • To get an A* grade you need: • To get an A grade overall • To gain an average of at least 90% across your A2 modules

Re-sits • Students need to think CAREFULY about January re-sit strategy • What grade do they need to reach their TMG? • What grades do they need if they are looking at particular university courses? • Talk to teachers and Form tutors • Entries to Exams officer • Pay for module re-sits: • If it’s a first re-sit and UMS score increases, you get a refund! • Between £20-£30 approx per module

  10. TMGs • If students are working beneath their TMG they are underachieving for a student of your ability • Contract for ‘High’ E grades • If AS UMS total is not at a D grade by March results students will be withdrawn from A2

  12. UCAS • UCAS OPENS FOR APPLICATIONS 15th SEPTEMBER • OXFORD/CAMBRIDGE/MEDICINE/ DENISTRY APPLICATIONS HAVE TO BE WITH UCAS BY 15TH OCT – SCHOOL DEADLINE 10TH OCT • ALL OTHER APPLICATIONS – INTERNAL DEADLINE IS 10TH NOV – NO MORE HELP AFTER THIS TIME • UCAS DEADLINE IS 15th JANUARY

UCAS – MAKING CHOICES • A maximum of five choices are available. • Some students make just one choice at a local university; others go for two different courses; the majority of students pick the same subject at five different places. • Tip: making the right choices matters - students should only apply to places they want to go to.

UCAS – MAKING CHOICES • The distance between the chosen university and your family home will affect you as well as your son or daughter. • With over 50,000 courses in the UCAS system, and each with a unique code, it is very important that your son or daughter puts time aside to double-check things like UCAS course and institution codes.

UCAS- Predicted grades • Students need to get predicted grades from teachers via the BLUE FORM • They MUST apply to courses that are making offers that are achievable via the predicted grades • Some students have trouble getting places in August because they did not make the grades and did not choose a sensible insurance offer. • Big focus in PSD from now on. • References will be written by either Form Tutor OR a subject teacher who knows them well.

  17. UCAS – PERSONAL STATEMENT • The personal statement is the only opportunity to personalise the application. It is very important that students take time to prepare this. • UCAS now use software to detect plagiarism in personal statements • Get this done as soon as possible! • A draft should be complete already

  18. UCAS - Loan/Grant applications • April/May • Information from us around then – students can apply online • Students should investigate Bursaries themselves • These are often grade dependent but VERY competitive!

  19. UCAS – Sending the application • We will write the reference for your son or daughter and send the form to UCAS electronically. • UCAS requires students to pay by credit or debit card before submitting the application, this is done online.

Some useful points for your son or daughter to remember • Make sure they double-check all the information they include on the application before sending it to their referee. • Advise them to read the information on their welcome letter carefully. • Inform us and institutions of any changes, for example, to their examinations or postal address. • Make sure they reply to offers by the stated reply-by date.

UCAS - Gap Year • If students wish to take an ‘official’ Gap year they need to apply this year and indicate their intention. • Students can simply not apply this year and apply for 2014 entry – we will be happy to support applications for a year after students leave sixth form • Students MUST indicate why they are taking a Gap Year – it must be a good reason!

Not applying to Uni? • Students who do not wish to apply for university must indicate this to the Sixth Form team before Christmas • Students should still write a personal statement and CV in order to aid application for jobs/further training • Careers interviews are available – see Mrs Warwick

UCAS - Accepting offers • Students should wait until they receive replies from all their universities • Offers can start coming from two weeks after the form has been sent • Some may not come till March • Students then choose a firm and insurance offer • The Firm offer MUST match the predicted grades • The insurance offer should be lower in grades • If no offers are made students can use UCAS Extra

  24. UCAS - Clearing • Students are automatically entered into clearing if they do not make the grades for either their firm or insurance offers • The UCAS website will list courses with spaces • Time to get on the phone!

EXAM ENTRY REQUIREMENTS • Entry to exams in Sixth Form is NOT automatic. • To be entered for exams students must: • Have a minimum attendance level 90% • Complete all work including coursework to at least a satisfactory standard • It is the student’s responsibility to check their exam entry slips for any errors (these are normally provided 6 weeks in advance)

  29. Enrichment • Not compulsory in Year 13, but still excellent to be involved in • Particular need for students to run events for new Year 12s • Enrichment Fair tomorrow P5 Walthamstow Hall

Attendance & Punctuality • UCAS references!!! • Job references!!! • Volunteering references!!! • Charging for exam entries • Please ring Sixth Form Admin before 8.40am if you are not in through illness or VALID excuse • If not – phone call home • Self certification • Ensure work is caught up with – contact teachers

And to finish on… How to Help Provide a quiet, private work space at home Help students balance study and leisure time Encourage the use of revision timetables Help with organisation and equipment Respect their priorities and be aware of stress Insist on punctuality and attendance Paid employment – should be no more than 10-12 hours per week
