  1. Obj 4 notes

  2. Obj 4.4 • The interior of the Earth is hot. Heat flow and movement of material within the Earth cause earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, create mountains, and ocean basins.

  3. Obj 4 • Fossils of the same reptiles have been found on various continents suggesting these continents were once connected. • The ancient supercontinent that contained all landmasses is called Pangea. • Convection currents in the asthenosphere appears to cause movement of Earth’s tectonic plates.

  4. Obj 4.4 • Lithospheric plates (land plates) move at centimeters per year because of the movement of the mantle.

  5. Obj 4 • Evidence that supports the theory of continental drift: • Close fit of continental coastlines • Similarity of fossils found on continental coasts • The matching of glacial grooves on different continents

  6. Obj 4.4 • The lithosphere is divided into tectonic plates. • The lithospheric plates (land plates) ride on a fluid-like asthenosphere (as-thin-as liquid).

  7. Obj 4 • Tectonic plates consist of continental crust and oceanic crust. • The newest land is located nearest to the location of sea-floor spreading. • The lithospheric plates (land plates, tectonic plates) move in relation to one another at one of three types of plate boundaries: convergent, divergent, and transform.

  8. Transform Boundary • Two plates slide past each other horizontally – transform boundary • A possible result of plates moving along a transform boundary is earthquakes.

  9. Divergent Boundary • Two plates move away from one another- divergent boundary • Divergent boundaries cause sea-floor spreading at mid-ocean ridges.

  10. Convergent Boundary • Two plates collide - convergent boundary • Subduction zones occur at continental-oceanic collisions(when oceanic crust crashes into continental crust). • Mountains are formed when tectonic plates (continental crust ) converge.

  11. Test Essay • Describe the continental drift theory and the evidence that supports the theory.
