  1. Women & the Word By MiXue

  2. Authority of the Word Revelation vs Reason

  3. Revelation vs Reason

  4. 2 Tim 3:16-17 All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.

  5. Heb 4:12 For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

  6. What happens when you disagree with Scripture? • Not inspired? • Mistranslated? • Errors? • Cultural?

  7. “Indeed, has God said?”

  8. Genesis 3:1 Now the serpent was more crafty than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said to the woman, "Indeed, has God said, 'You shall not eat from any tree of the garden'?"

  9. Today every NT Scripture addressed to women is either: ignored, disputed, disregarded, disobeyed. “Indeed, has God said?”

  10. What Scriptural topic is under most attack today? Women’s issues 1991 – Southern Baptist Convention split over this issue 1,900 churches split off from mother church of 42,000

  11. Rejection of Scriptures on women opened the way to: • Ordination of women • Acceptance of homosexuality as a God-ordained lifestyle • Ordination of homosexuals • Rampant sexual promiscuity w/in church

  12. Major verses under attack: • Male headship in the Home Eph 5:22-33 1 Pt 3:1-7 1 Cor 7 • Male headship in the Church 1 Tim 3 1 Tim 2:9-15 1 Cor 14:34-38 1 Cor 11:3-16

  13. Male headship in the Home Husband as Head: • Takes the lead • Makes the final decisions • Sets the values, purpose and calling for family

  14. Husband = Head: Eph 5:22-24 Wives, be subject to your own husbands, as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife, as Christ also is the head of the church, He Himself being the Savior of the body. But as the church is subject to Christ, so also the wives ought to be to their husbands in everything.

  15. Wife=Body: Eph 5:25-30 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself up for her, so that He might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, that He might present to Himself the church in all her glory, having no spot or wrinkle or any such thing; but that she would be holy and blameless. So husbands ought also to love their own wives as their own bodies. He who loves his own wife loves himself; for no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ also does the church, because we are members of His body.

  16. Mystery: Eph 5:31-33 FOR THIS REASON A MAN SHALL LEAVE HIS FATHER AND MOTHER AND SHALL BE JOINED TO HIS WIFE, AND THE TWO SHALL BECOME ONE FLESH. This mystery is great; but I am speaking with reference to Christ and the church. Nevertheless, each individual among you also is to love his own wife even as himself, and the wife must see to it that she respects her husband.

  17. Husband/Head +Wife/Helper Oneness Christ and the Church 1 + 1 = 1

  18. Male headship in the Home Wives as “helpmeet” • Support role vs lead role • Complementary vs competitive

  19. 1+1=1

  20. 1+1=1

  21. The Wife’s Way: 1 Pt 3:1-2 In the same way, you wives, be submissive to your own husbands so that even if any of them are disobedient to the word, they may be won without a word by the behavior of their wives, as they observe your chaste and respectful behavior.

  22. A Woman’s Beauty: 1 Pt 3:3-4 Your adornment must not be merely external--braiding the hair, and wearing gold jewelry, or putting on dresses; but let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the imperishable quality of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is precious in the sight of God.

  23. Fearless trust: 1 Pt 3:5-6 For in this way in former times the holy women also, who hoped in God, used to adorn themselves, being submissive to their own husbands; just as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord, and you have become her children if you do what is right without being frightened by any fear.

  24. Buckle your seat belt

  25. Accountability: 1 Pt 3:7 You husbands in the same way, live with your wives in an understanding way, as with someone weaker, since she is a woman; and show her honor as a fellow heir of the grace of life, so that your prayers will not be hindered.

  26. Isn’t submission for inferiors? • saying, "Father, if You are willing, remove this cup from Me; yet not My will, but Yours be done." (Luke 22:42) • Although He was a Son, He learned obedience from the things which He suffered. (Heb 5:8)

  27. Difference between: • Cultural Submission • based on inferiority • Biblical Submission • based on voluntary equality

  28. Obedience ≠ Agreement

  29. Marital Sex: 1 Cor 7:1-5 Now concerning the things about which you wrote, it is good for a man not to touch a woman. But because of immoralities, each man is to have his own wife, and each woman is to have her own husband. The husband must fulfill his duty to his wife, and likewise also the wife to her husband. The wife does not have authority over her own body, but the husband does; and likewise also the husband does not have authority over his own body, but the wife does. Stop depriving one another, except by agreement for a time, so that you may devote yourselves to prayer, and come together again so that Satan will not tempt you because of your lack of self-control. .

  30. Sex as Spiritual Warfare Stop depriving one another, except by agreement for a time, so that you may devote yourselves to prayer, and come together again so that Satan will not tempt you because of your lack of self-control.(1Cor. 7:5)

  31. Singleness as Gift: 1 Cor 7:6-9 But this I say by way of concession, not of command. Yet I wish that all men were even as I myself am. However, each man has his own gift from God, one in this manner, and another in that. But I say to the unmarried and to widows that it is good for them if they remain even as I. But if they do not have self-control, let them marry; for it is better to marry than to burnwith passion.

  32. Divorce: 1 Cor 7:10-11 But to the married I give instructions, not I, but the Lord, that the wife should not leave her husband (but if she does leave, she must remain unmarried, or else be reconciled to her husband), and that the husband should not divorce his wife.

  33. Unbelieving spouse:1 Cor 7:12-13 But to the rest I say, not the Lord, that if any brother has a wife who is an unbeliever, and she consents to live with him, he must not divorce her. And a woman who has an unbelieving husband, and he consents to live with her, she must not send her husband away.

  34. Unsaved sanctified: 1 Cor 7:14-16 For the unbelieving husband is sanctified through his wife, and the unbelieving wife is sanctified through her believing husband; for otherwise your children are unclean, but now they are holy. Yet if the unbelieving one leaves, let him leave; the brother or the sister is not under bondage in such cases, but God has called us to peace. For how do you know, O wife, whether you will save your husband? Or how do you know, O husband, whether you will save your wife?

  35. Unmarried virgin daughters: 1 Cor 7:25-28 Now concerning virgins I have no command of the Lord, but I give an opinion as one who by the mercy of the Lord is trustworthy. I think then that this is good in view of the present distress, that it is good for a man to remain as he is. Are you bound to a wife? Do not seek to be released. Are you released from a wife? Do not seek a wife. But if you marry, you have not sinned; and if a virgin marries, she has not sinned. Yet such will have trouble in this life, and I am trying to spare you.

  36. Shortened time: 1 Cor 7:29-31 But this I say, brethren, the time has been shortened, so that from now on those who have wives should be as though they had none; and those who weep, as though they did not weep; and those who rejoice, as though they did not rejoice; and those who buy, as though they did not possess; and those who use the world, as though they did not make full use of it; for the form of this world is passing away.

  37. Single Devotion: 1 Cor 7:32-35 But I want you to be free from concern. One who is unmarried is concerned about the things of the Lord, how he may please the Lord; but one who is married is concerned about the things of the world, how he may please his wife, and his interests are divided. The woman who is unmarried, and the virgin, is concerned about the things of the Lord, that she may be holy both in body and spirit; but one who is married is concerned about the things of the world, how she may please her husband. This I say for your own benefit; not to put a restraint upon you, but to promote what is appropriate and to secure undistracted devotion to the Lord.

  38. Male headship in the Church • Males lead & rule • as elders & pastors • Males teach • preach & discipline flock

  39. Silence in church: 1 Cor 14:34-38 The women are to keep silent in the churches; for they are not permitted to speak, but are to subject themselves, just as the Law also says. If they desire to learn anything, let them ask their own husbands at home; for it is improper for a woman to speak in church. Was it from you that the word of God first went forth? Or has it come to you only? If anyone thinks he is a prophet or spiritual, let him recognize that the things which I write to you are the Lord's commandment. But if anyone does not recognize this, he is not recognized.

  40. Male teachers: 1 Tim 2:11-15 A woman must quietly receive instruction with entire submissiveness. But I do not allow a woman to teach or exercise authority over a man, but to remain quiet. For it was Adam who was first created, and then Eve. And it was not Adam who was deceived, but the woman being deceived, fell into transgression. But womenwill be preserved through the bearing of children if they continue in faith and love and sanctity with self-restraint.

  41. To honor Word: Titus 2:3-5 • (Tit 2:3 NASB) Older women likewise are to be reverent in their behavior, not malicious gossips nor enslaved to much wine, teaching what is good, • (Tit 2:4 NASB) so that they may encourage the young women to love their husbands, to love their children, • (Tit 2:5 NASB) to be sensible, pure, workers at home, kind, being subject to their own husbands, so that the word of God will not be dishonored.

  42. To honor head: 1 Cor 11:3-6 But I want you to understand that Christ is the head of every man, and the man is the head of a woman, and God is the head of Christ. Every man who has something on his head while praying or prophesying disgraces his head. But every woman who has her head uncovered while praying or prophesying disgraces her head, for she is one and the same as the woman whose head is shaved. For if a woman does not cover her head, let her also have her hair cut off; but if it is disgraceful for a woman to have her hair cut off or her head shaved, let her cover her head.

  43. Symbol of Authority: 1 Cor 11:7-10 For a man ought not to have his head covered, since he is the image and glory of God; but the woman is the glory of man. For man does not originate from woman, but woman from man; for indeed man was not created for the woman's sake, but woman for the man's sake. Therefore the woman ought to have a symbol of authority on her head, because of the angels.

  44. CoveringGlory: 1 Cor 11:11-16 However, in the Lord, neither is woman independent of man, nor is man independent of woman. For as the woman originates from the man, so also the man has his birth through the woman; and all things originate from God. Judge for yourselves: is it proper for a woman to pray to God with her head uncovered? Does not even nature itself teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a dishonor to him, but if a woman has long hair, it is a glory to her? For her hair is given to her for a covering. But if one is inclined to be contentious, we have no other practice, nor have the churches of God.

  45. Word has no authority, if it can be established that it is a “cultural command,” “nonessential command,” “error.” But who has the authority to determine this?

  46. 2 Pt 1:20-21 But know this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture is a matter of one's own interpretation, for no prophecy was ever made by an act of human will, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God.

  47. What happens when Word has no authority any more? • (Jdg 21:25) In those days there was no king in Israel; everyone did what was right in his own eyes. We live in this kind of world today.

  48. Beware when you hear: “Indeed, has God sssaid?”
