  1. Vocabulary Lesson 9 Salvador Dali (1904-1989) Surrealist artist PowerPoint by Mrs. Hinton For English 10 Montevallo High School

  2. PERCEPTION • What is your perception of the work of surrealist artist Salvador Dali? Do you understand, for instance, his depictions of the human body?

  3. MUTABLE • For artistic purposes, Dali certainly found the human body mutable: He freely changed its basic form in a number of paintings.

  4. INDESTRUCTIBLE • Dali’s view in the painting Soft Construction with Boiled Beans: Premonition of Civil War seems to be not only that humanity is not indestructible, but that it is capable of its own destruction.

  5. INNATE • The painting clearly illustrates Dali’s ability to defy reality on canvas. Such an ability can’t, I think, be learned: It must be inborn, or innate.

  6. COMPLIANCE • In that disturbing painting, Dali shows compliance, or agreement, with the surrealist belief that feelings and ideas must be expressed.

  7. AXIOM • Don’t you think Dali’s painting prove the old axiom “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder”?

  8. INANIMATE • Of course, Dali's paintings are inanimate objects, yet they are hardly lifeless or spiritless.

  9. PREVALENT • Although surrealism was a popular movement in its day, the surrealist style never became prevalent in the art world. It was confined to a small group of artists.

  10. COMPATIBLE • Frankly, I have never been compatible with anyone who likes surrealist art, but maybe we can learn to get along.

  11. RECOURSE • Perhaps you are my last recourse for help in learning to appreciate surrealist art.

  12. I hope you found the context clues! ~Mrs. Hinton Vocabulary Lesson 9 Salvador Felipe Jacinto Dalí Domènech Marquis of Pubol (May 11, 1904 – January 23, 1989), popularly known as Salvador Dalí, he was born in Figueras, Spain and became one of the more influential painters of the 20th Century.
