  2. Applying for Jobs • Why is a CV important for job applications? Do you have a CV and if so, how often do you update it? What are the differences between a CV and a resume? • What is a cover letter and have you ever written one? Why do you think some jobs require one? • Have you ever applied for a job? If yes, how do you find the process of applying for jobs here? • Have you ever made it to the interview stage of a job? How did you find the interview? What tips did you receive before the interview from family or friends?

Applying for Jobs Cont. • How would you answer the following common interview questions: • Where do you see yourself in five years? • What is your biggest weakness? • Why should we hire you? • What are your hobbies outside of work? • Are you planning on starting a family? • Can you tell me about a conflict you’ve faced at work and how you dealt with it? • Do you have any questions for me? • Why do you think that these questions are popular with interviewers?

  4. Work: General Questions • Which of your friend’s, family or acquaintances would you say has the most interesting job? What about their profession makes it interesting? • Have you ever met someone who has been fired? What was the experience like for the person? • Would you prefer to have a job where you follow routines or a job where you had to make regular decisions? • What is your opinion about people doing unpaid work in order to get experience?

  5. Work: General Questions Cont. • What characteristics would a good boss or manager need to do their job? • In Japan, the concept of a “job for life” is quite common. Do you agree with this idea? • How good do you think working conditions are in your country? How about abroad? • How difficult do you think it would be for one to start their own business? What are some of the pros and cons.

  6. Working Conditions • What comes to mind when you hear the term sweatshop? What do you know about them? • Are you aware that many large companies often use sweatshops for producing clothes?   7. Working Conditions Cont. • Are there any companies in your country that have famously poor work conditions? How about the opposite, companies with good track records? • Have you heard of any Western companies that have particularly bad work conditions? Why do you think some companies may be strict with their workers? • What do you think constitutes good working conditions? What types of things would you expect from a future job? • Have you or anyone you know ever worked somewhere with poor working conditions?
