  4. What you are going to do -For this station, you are going to navigate your way through the PowerPoint using the icons in the lower right corner. -At the end you are to answer the 4 questions on your worksheet going over what you learned at this station. Have fun and happy learning!

  5. Positions • Goalkeeper: To protect the goal and keep that ball from getting past you • Defender: a player whose position of play is behind the midfielders and whose first and foremost purpose is to provide support to the goalkeeper. Their primary function is to prevent the other team from scoring a goal.

  6. Positions Cont. • Midfielders: a player whose position of play is midway between the attacking forwards and the defenders. Their main functions are to tackle the opposing team, to retain possession of the ball, and to feed it to the forwards, and perhaps, to score as well. • Forwards: A player who’s sole purpose is to score goals

  8. Rules • Duration of Game: Standard adult games are limited by the official soccer rules to two halves of 45 minutes each, separated by a 15 minutes break. This is not the actual time of play, since this 90 minute clock ticks even when the ball is out of play, during substitutions and so forth. • Ball in and out of play: the ball is in play all throughout the match duration, except when it passes a bounding line (goal lines and touch lines), when an offence occurs or when play is stopped by the referee. In these particular cases, the ball is out of play and the soccer players cannot score goals or interact with the ball. In addition, substitutions can only occur when the ball is out of play

  9. Rules Cont. • Scoring: As long as the ball is in play and no infringements of any soccer rules are being made, the players can score goals. A goal is considered when the ball crosses one of the goal areas with its entire circumference. Goals can be scored from action, from penalty spots and direct free kicks.   10. Rules Cont. • Offsides: To be in an "offside position", a player must be on the opponent's half of the field & closer to the opponent's goal line than both the ball & the second-last defender. Also, the player must be involved in "active play" by either: gaining an advantage by being in an offside position, or interfering with play, or interfering with an opponent. • For more information about offsides click on the picture:

Yellow Card vs. Red Card • Yellow Card: It is considered a “caution” for any of the following: unsporting behavior, dissent by word or actions, persistently breaking the rules, delaying the restart of play, staying the proper distance away from a kick, entering and re-entering the field without permission • Red Card: When shown this the player must be sent off, he/she is taken out of the game for the following offenses: violent conduct, spitting at anyone, serious foul play, touching the ball with hand on purpose, threatening language, and receiving a second yellow card

  12. Safety • All players should wear shin guards that cover the leg from below the knee to just above the foot. Knee-high socks are worn over the shin guards. Avoid shoes with screw-in metal cleats; molded plastic cleats are softer and therefore less likely to cause injury. • As children become more experienced and skilled at the game, they will want to learn about headers (bouncing the ball off their heads). They should be taught to hit the ball only with the forehead and not the temple. • Balls come in various sizes for players of different age groups. Check with your coach to make sure they are practicing with the right size ball.
