  3. Science Curriculum • Riverview STEM Academy will use Project Lead The Way, known as PLTW as the primary STEM curriculum. PLTW is an innovative, project-based approach that fosters collaboration and builds critical thinking skills. • PLTW aligns to Common Core State Standards for Math and English Language Arts, Next Generation Science Standards, and other national and state standards.

  19. Kindergarten Orientation for 2014-2015 School Year Here are some helpful hints that will help your little one transition nicely into kindergarten and set him or her up for a successful year. I. Slip Session A.M. Session – 8:15 am -1:42 pm P.M. Session – 9:00 am -2:27 pm Whole Group Time from 9:56 am -12:19pm (PE, Assemblies, Library Computers, etc.) Lunch 11:30 am -12:10 pm II. Volunteers This summer, get your valid TB Test and fingerprints by Live Scan completed. Both are required to work in any classroom. Get your Volunteer Packet completed at the beginning of the school year. Forms are located in the school Office. Then you will be ready to go as soon as the teachers begin having volunteers in the classroom.

Pre-Kindergarten Assessment on April 28th from 8:30am-2:30pm -Assessment will include (basic academic skills): writing name, verbally counting, letter names, letter sounds, shapes, cutting with scissors and high frequency words. (This takes about 15 minutes) -Assessment information will assist in your child’s placement next year. -Students are notgrouped according to reading level. All classes are balanced. -There are NO teacher requests, information on special needs are welcomed. IV. Kindergarten Readiness -How did your child perform at his of her pre-kindergarten assessment? -Does your child have the basic academic skills? -Can your child: listen to stories without interrupting, pay attention for periods of time to adult-directed tasks, take directions from a number of different adults, share with others, follow rules, manage bathroom needs, button, snap and zip his or her own clothes, control oneself, separate from parents/caregivers without becoming upset, know the majority of letter names and sounds, take turns and speak in complete sentences?

  21. Language Arts -Beginning of the year (August) assessment will include: uppercase and lowercase letter identification, letter sounds and rhyming words. -Nightly Reading! Set up the routine now! (20 minutes per night) -Familiarize your child with Fairy Tales and Nursery Rhymes. Talk to your child about story elements, such as, character, setting, problem, solution, beginning, middle and end of the story. Read rhyming stories. -Concepts of Print- Help your child by asking these questions while reading a book: Where is the cover, title, beginning of the story and the end of the story? -Also, ask your children the difference between a letter, word and sentence. Mathematics -Beginning of the year (August) assessment will include verbal counting and writing/recognizing numbers to 20. -Things to practice this summer: verbally counting forward and backward, counting objects, sorting different manipulative by a variety of values, creating and extending patterns, recognizing numerals out of order, recognizing shapes, recognizing colors and sizes.
