  1. Texture Be the end of this lesson you will: Know: About four different textures used in music Understand: the role of texture in music Be able to: Compose using the four different types of texture that you have learned today

  2. I see the lesson being broken down into quick 10/15 minute tasks. I’ve made a little suggestion below. TASK 1 – MONOPHONIC: Learn a melody (what ever melody you choose) Perform it. TASK 2 – OCTAVES: In pairs play TASK 1 at different octaves. TASK 3 – MELODY WITH ACCONMPANIMENT – Learn the chords to the melody – Perform it! TASK 4 – HOMOPHONIC: Adapt the chords so they play at the same time as the melody. TASK 5 – POLYPHONIC / CONTRPUNCTUAL: Compose a new melody and play it at the same time as TASK 1. TASK 6 – CANON: Split the class into 4 groups and start the melody (TASK 1) four bars after each other. Each group keeps on repeating the melody. TASK 7 – ANTIPHONAL: Improvise a musical conversation in pairs to a backing track (decode scale and find backing track).

  3. Task 1: Work out and play the following • ADD A Bassline or melody from a song

  4. TextureWrite this down! • Unison texture- Everyone sings/plays the exact same thing at the exact same time • Octave texture- The pitch of the singers or instruments is exactly an octave apart. (E.g. C and C above and below) • Monophonic texture- one line of music played • Homophonic texture- where two lines of different music are sung/played at the same time • Polyphonic- when many lines of different music are being played at the same time. • Melody and accompaniment- melody line with accompaniment (not to be confused with homophonic)

  5. Add octaves The melody (vocal or instrumental) with the band providing accompaniment.. Melody with accompaniment Melody and the accompaniment moves mainly to the same rhythm. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homophony Homophonic Monophonic Single melody line. Polyphonic 2 or more melodies played at the same time of equal importance. Canon An imitative texture in which the copied versions of the melody are identical to the original. All the instruments play notes at the same pitch. (brass intro) Unison Antiphonal Music performed by an ensemble divided into two or more distinct groups which perform in alternation and together.

  8. Monophonic Texture • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S6yuR8efotI • Task 4: Individual pupils to sing or play melody

  9. Homophonic Texture • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P1Ep55Xhur4 • Decode the next part of the song • Task 5: Divide class in half with each half playing the different lines of music

  10. Polyphonic • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-CwICXwLBmo&feature=channel • Learn next line of music • Task 6: Divide class into three with each group performing different line of music
